at last - forced to try this!, October 10, 2010
This review is from: Square Wisdom: 75*5 Calcudoku Samurai Puzzles (Paperback)
Look, I'm pretty addicted to all things sudoku. If anyone reads my reviews they may think that I do nothing else with my time. Not strictly true. But it's my main hobby, and I've developed a great love of it all over the past few years. Samurai is one of my favourites, especially killer. After trying many authors, I found DJAPE, and have really not had to go any further. There is definitely a difference with this author - human contribution outweighs computer-generated-only stuff. You get to learn new patterns every time you sit down with that page of numbers; sometimes I gasp with delight when I discover a cute little sequence or a new strategy by accident. So, having said that, this square wisdom book had been sitting on my shelf for quite a while. Thinking about the four operations, using actual mathematical skills (aghast!) in addition to logic, finding out that indeed, you can have 6 plus 1 plus 1 adding up to 8 in these puzzles, made me wonder if I could ever get past the first page.
However, DJAPE (did he really go to Florence?) made us wait a little longer than usual between publications - and then of course published three truly excellent books together. (I can tell you this because I am already working my way through them!) I looked at that CalcuDoku book, took it off the shelf, and thought "No, I'm not going to go and get a Puzzler to tide me over. I'm going to give it a go". Because DJAPE always adds a few little extra treats of other variants at the end of his books, I sometimes catch onto a new one straight away. This time it didn't automatically happen for me. But coz I had nothing else, I persevered. Hey, yay! It's not for bedtime puzzling; a bit too much brain power needed for that. But I am proud to say that I have completed every puzzle in this book. And ended up loving it!!!
Always rely on this author for well written instructions and hints, and great paper quality.

Again good brain entertainment from Djape, April 12, 2010
This review is from: Square Wisdom: 75*5 Calcudoku Samurai Puzzles (Paperback)
Djape has created a number of great books with Sudoku and it's variations. I have especial enjoyed his books on Killer Sudoku's. CalcuDoku is again a variation on Killer Sudoku. In this puzzles you need besides addition also substraction, multiplication and division. To make live easy Djape has combined five puzzles in one (Samurai puzzle). The sizes of the individual puzzles are 5x5, 6x6, 7x7 and 8x8. So if the clue is for example 28 with three cells, you know that the answer will be 1x4x7 or 2x2x7 if the three cell are around the corner. In CalcuDoku you may have double digits. The levels increase with the size and from Easy to IQ. To give you help on the last pages there are some tables for multiplication above the 100. So far I have tried on all levels and sizes a few puzzles and it is real fun!

Not for me!, February 8, 2011
This review is from: Square Wisdom: 75*5 Calcudoku Samurai Puzzles (Paperback)
I tried, but I cannot get into this style of puzzle. It seems like there are too many options for filling in a space and the overlapping puzzles only complicate it more. Since I got stuck on the ones labeled "Easy," I did not finish this book. Generally, the more challenging a puzzle is, the more I like it, but I must be missing something with this variation.
