1.0 out of 5 stars No luck with Squaretrade, February 25, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: SquareTrade One-Year Open-Box Electronics Warranty: Open-Box Items $200-$2000 (Electronics)
I ordered a Denon AVR Receiver through Amazon Warehouse deals. The receiver was used so I picked up the open box warranty for piece of mind (hoping to never use it).

So about 8 weeks after it arrived the surround right speaker port quit. I switched cables, switched speakers, everything I could think of. I called Denon and their service . . .but they are about as helpful as a pile of rocks. So I filed the claim on Squaretrade and was rejected quickly? Why? On this used item they thought I had in-warranty.

Okay, if I had one year warranty from Denon on a used product WHY would I need squaretrade? (Denon's paper sent to me clearly noted that it isn't transferable and only valid from authorized sellers)

I emailed them several times, but never did get much of a reply. This was pretty frustrating, especially for a 500 dollar receiver. So I emailed Amazon.com for help. As always Amazon stepped up. Opened up the return window, provided me with a shipping label. did everything to make it right. So in the end I wasn't stuck with an unusable warranty and a receiver that only worked 4 out of 5 speakers.

This time I skipped used, and bought a brand new Onkyo as a replacement. Right now I'm just trying to get squaretrade to give me my money back. . .since I feel they didn't honor our agreement (and I don't have the receiver anymore)

Warranty's are all five star, until you have to use them.

UPDATE 9/26/2011

After eventually contacting the company through social networking sites and emailing various higher-ups directly, we did finally get the warranty madness sorted out. After reviewing the invoice the repair guy submitted, they went ahead and approved my claim. We also had several people apologize for the experience I had. Following approval, I was given two options -- equivalent replacement since the TV was no longer sold or full cash refund. The one they offered didn't look as awesome at Best Buy, so we took the refund via Amazon giftcard, which was sent to us today.

I'm happy to report we've ordered a replacement television, including a SquareTrade warranty. Obviously, the customer service experience was kind of nuts, but I've been assured this was an isolated experience.

---------

09/08/2011ish - We purchased a one year extension on the manufacturer's warranty for an out of box Samsung Plasma television that we purchased through Amazon. We were concerned that it might have issues since it's out of box and that a one year warranty wouldn't be long enough, but thankfully SquareTrade was here to put our mind at ease.

Fast forward 18 months to a few weeks ago when we turned the TV on, but nothing was being displayed on the panel, despite having audio and the LED power light coming on. Further inspection revealed that there was a crack running from the top to bottom of the internal panel. So, I submitted a claim with SquareTrade. They asked for some pictures and additional questions to my claim, titled "Crack running down center of television screen". After sending in pictures, my claim was approved pretty quickly. Awesome, because this TV is 18 months old and stopped working. TVs shouldn't stop working if I'm still measuring their age in months.

Here's where things get sketchy. We're handled by an agent who has only been there a week by his own admission -- he also describes himself as being "completely overwhelmed." After the claim was approved on Friday, it took four business days hear back from the agent after I called a few times and sent a few emails since we didn't get contacted by the repair company in the promised 48 hours. Apparently, they misplaced our paperwork. During this conversation, the agent casually mentions that if it's a crack, it won't be covered. In my brain, I hear that record scratch noise and ask, "Wut? You already approved my claim." The agent quickly backpedals, saying that it's not a real approval, except I have an email from SquareTrade saying it was approved. In any case, they'll still send the tech guy out, which I get scheduled for the following week.

A full two weeks have passed since filing the claim when the repair guy from a local company comes. He fills out an invoice, describing the problem as "internal crack in panel, no exterior damage" -- consistent with what I've been describing to SquareTrade the entire time. I hear nothing from SquareTrade the following day and, since I already know what I'm dealing with, call them my own. I tell the same agent that I've been speaking with the the problem was described as a crack in the panel, but that the company said they could repair it. I ask them if I can follow up directly with the company or if SquareTrade needs to make some sort of final second approval, despite my claim being approved already. He says that is fine for me to set up the repair with the company and it's great to hear it can be repaired. I call the repair company and, while I'm on hold, get a call from SquareTrade.

Surprise! The claim that has now been approved via email and, just moments before, verbally, is not actually approved at all. It turns out that apparently any crack, whether caused by accidental damage or not, is considered accidental damage. My already approved claim is out the window. I am also told that if I do think it's a manufacturing defect, I can contact the manufacturer. I'm not sure what good that is supposed to do, as the one year manufacturer warranty has already expired. Besides, if it's a manufacturing defect, isn't that precisely what this extended warranty is supposed to cover? If not what the heck does it cover?

They offered a refund on the warranty, which I have not yet taken. Updates forthcoming, but until then, one star for SquareTrade. I'm also going to stop recommending them to my friends or purchasing them myself, as they are apparently useless.

I'm only rating the warranty because I actually had to contact them. My laptop seemingly crashed so I called to see if they would honor my warranty. The customer service was excellent, whereas I was expecting the csr to find a way out of honoring the warranty. I suggest saving the receipt in your email, for the product you are buying the warranty. Once you purchase the warranty, follow the steps on the warranties site.

2.0 out of 5 stars squaretrade warrenty, January 25, 2012
This review is from: SquareTrade One-Year Open-Box Electronics Warranty: Open-Box Items $200-$2000 (Electronics)
I purchased a 3 year warrenty on a vhs dvd recorder, assuming this warrenty would start when manufacturer warrenty (1 year)
would expire. However Squaretrade warrenty starts at day of purchase. So the first year of Squaretrade warrenty is useless,
because manufacturer warrenty is used first. So just be informed that this is this case, even though paying for a three year warrenty, you are in fact receiving a two year warrenty from Squartrade. This information comes from Squartrade customer service themselves.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great price, great service, December 21, 2011

This is now our 25th warranty purchase from Square Trade. We are extremely pleased by not only the pricing of the warranties, but also the service associated with that warranty. We've had to make one claim on my netbook (it got dropped from a table and the hinges cracked, making the unit unusable). We had our refund within 3 days of receipt of the unit by Square Trade. I would highly recommend this company to anyone considering a warranty for any purchase for any reason. This is definitely a company focused on Customer Service! Thanks Square Trade for an awesome product at a reasonable price!

This review is from: SquareTrade One-Year Open-Box Electronics Warranty: Open-Box Items $200-$2000 (Electronics)
I would hesitate buying this warrranty as it overlaps the original warranty from the manufacturer. Maybe buy it after the original one expires, if it does not cost too much. Wasted first year coverage as it stands now. not a good deal.

about a few days after recieving the device a customer service rep called me and made sure I had gotten everything I needed to start my warranty and I accidently deleted my contract e-mail. The rep gladly said they would e-mail me another copy. When i got home and on the computer I easily created a password and logged in and in a few minutes I had my warranty all done.
