3.0 out of 5 stars Only For Diehard Gore & Horror Lovers, October 2, 2010
By
Compay (New Orleans, LA) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
This review is from: Squeal (DVD)
If you're a fan of low-budget horror flicks with angry creatures and gore, Squeal is worth giving a watch. But if you're not a diehard horror fan, you may want to give this one a pass.

Squeal is the tale of a group of band members and their entourage, stranded in the snowy Midwest where a pig-man mutant is on a killing spree.

Pros: The concept behind the creatures are original, and there's more than a good bit of gore and violence. A few of the scenes made me wince, so I consider the torture element of the film a success. The actresses are all sexy, with a few moments of brief nudity (as well as some pig-man "makin' bacon" action).

Cons: Squeal is incredibly low-budget. It's filled with plenty of shaky handheld camera shots, and very little color correction. The lighting isn't that great, and the night scenes are difficult to make out.

There isn't a real focus on the origin of the pig men, or why they're so sadistic. While the creatures are fairly original, the film borrows ideas from The Hills Have Eyes and Wrong Turn. Unlike most successful horror movies, Squeal has a noticeable lack of the usual campy humor that you might expect. And granted it's an indie gore flick, but none of the acting performances stood out.

If you're a hardcore horror fan that's always on the hunt for new and obscure movies, definitely give this one a watch. If you're not a diehard horror lover, you probably won't find Squeal that entertaining.

1.0 out of 5 stars Boring and Ridiculous., January 5, 2011
This review is from: Squeal (DVD)
I watched squeal last night and I wanted to scream.Scream because I wasted 6 bucks on demand for this ridiculous boring snooze fest.

OK a family of mutant pig people.Papa pig,Mama pig and baby pig "who loves putting lipstick on his snout" live way in the country "of course" and I don't mind cliches' I thrive on the formulas that make slashers what they are. Some 20' somethings breakdown and get captured by Porky and his son, they are thrown in cages and that is basically the plot. Most of the movie takes place watching people scream in cages.

The "gore" is cheaply done and not satisfying at all.I love a good indie slasher but please..I had my finger on the FF button through most of the movie.I didn't really FF it that much so I could really watch it and explain exactly how disappointed you will be if you waste your money on this trash.

Yes,the pig man simulates sex with a couple of women but he never takes off his clothes because they could only afford to throw a pig mask on his face,no money for body makeup.Bottom line,SKIP IT faster than Dorothy did down the yellow Brick Road.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pigs Are People Too!, November 14, 2010
By
This review is from: Squeal (DVD)
Squeal is a slasher-horror flick about a rock band whose vehicle breaks down, while on the way to perform a gig. They are then terrorized by mutants pig people!

Squeal pays homage to many horror movies that I have seen, including The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Hills Have Eyes, Wrong Turn, and Saw. Only there is an original twist here, with the monsters being half men/half pig. There are some slow moments in the first half of the film, but the second half is just a non-stop gore-and-scare fest. I'd recommend it for fans of the aforementioned movies. It's pretty scary!
