Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-6-- The characters from Play-by-Play (Clarion, 1986), Glenn's earlier novel about soccer, are back in a baseball novel. Sixth-grader Jeremy and his classmates are faced with a hard-driving teacher, formerly a military man, who wants the class to learn discipline. He challenges a local prep school to two baseball games, and sets up a series of intense practice sessions to get ready. This proves difficult for Jeremy, who is not a natural athlete. Jeremy receives good advice, however, from the man who owns a local card shop. The somewhat complicated elements of the plot move along swiftly, and the descriptions of the baseball action are exciting and accurate. Characters are believable, and, as in all good sports fiction, they learn more about both themselves and the game that they play by the book's end. --Todd Morning, Schaumburg Township Public Library, Ill.
