5.0 out of 5 stars Squier By Fender Strat RB3 June 20, 2011
This is the answer to everyone that's ever told you to get a (real) guitar as a RB or GH player.
Some info you need to know about the Squier up front...
When you get any guitar it will need more done to it than just plugging it in and playing. A real guitar needs to be tuned when you first take it out of the box, and may need to have the truss rod adjusted, and the string height set. These things may all be needed for the Squier as well since it is in fact a real guitar. It's also possible you will only need to tune it. It will depend on if you just want to use it as a controller, or as both a controller and a guitar.
Now on to the things needed for the controller part of the Squier...
You will need one of the Midi Pro adapters from Mad Catz to use it. The Squier will work with all three consoles as is, the thing that makes it console specific is the version of the Midi Pro you use. Controllers normally have to be bought for each console, in this case that would be $280 times three. But in this case you would just buy one Squier, and if you wanted to use it on the other systems just buy the Midi Pro for the systems you want to use it with. A total of $35.00 times three instead of three controllers.
The Squier comes with a midi cable in the box but you're better off not using it. The cables they shipped with the Squier are very cheap and will come apart after a short time. If the Squier starts acting whacky check your cable. You can get a good quality midi cable for very little $.
The Squier needs AA batteries and comes with a set. It also comes with an allen wrench for adjusting truss rod, which is done from the side of the neck close to the body of the guitar. Only do this if you're confident you know how, otherwise you can damage the neck.

5.0 out of 5 stars Musicians Friend + Amazon = great stuff May 29, 2011
Verified Purchase
This guitar used to be more expensive when other vendors sold through Amazon but now it's competitively priced here and even though Musician's Friend does free shipping on their site over $199, we've always enjoyed our service through Amazon.

The guitar arrived several days before scheduled (4 business days). It was ready to go out of the box except for tuning. From research we knew we needed the midi controller as well and had already ordered that through Amazon. We also have a Hart drum kit through a Roland TD-8 which we run through a Mad Catz midi controller so we're familiar with that setup and it makes gameplay so much more real - which, of course, is the point and the reason you'd spent $300 on a guitar to play Rock Band.

The guitar has mass and is pretty heavy, even compared to some of the electric guitars we own (but not as heavy as some). Keeps tuning well, as one would expect from a Fender Squire.

The guitar comes with a 10' midi cable. We purchased a 15' to get a little more length in our room arrangement but the 10' will get you what you need from the guitar to your midi box. The buttons on the guitar seem to control everything like the Wii controller, but we've used the midi box for the + and - controls.

You do have to mute the strings to play with the game, but the feel is real and for those who are used to playing guitar, this brings Rock Band to the game you've wanted it to be since you first picked up that plastic thing with 5 buttons. This has it all over the Mustang controller when it comes to fingering and playing chords for RB3.

Edit: When we purchased this guitar through Amazon it was in partnership with Musician's Friend and the price was $279. It seems as though Amazon switches suppliers for this regularly and the price is all over. THIS review was based on the $279 price during May 2011.

1.0 out of 5 stars DON'T GET RIPPED OFF!!! March 26, 2011
Fun: 1.0 out of 5 stars
Don't buy this guitar from these Amazon sellers, they are RIPPING YOU OFF! The Rock Band 3 Fender Squier is a Best Buy exclusive and can be purchased in stores or on their website for $279.99, far far below the asking price of $500 by these Amazon sellers.

Also, this thing is AWESOME.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't listen to the long negative review September 18, 2011
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
There's a long one-star review posted by "Yamster" that you shouldn't let yourself be swayed by. The Squier Stratocaster Guitar and Controller, though not a particularly _good_ guitar is an actual guitar and an excellent tool for learning (it's also an amazingly low priced MIDI guitar controller). If you want a great review of the instrument/controller by someone who knows what he's talking about, go to YouTube and watch Matt Rasmussen's excellent 3 part video review. Matt's a professional musician, founder and lead guitarist of the band Rose of Jericho, whose currently available published music can be bought right here on Amazon. An admitted techno-geek and avid video gamer, Matt really likes the Squier guitar-and-controller and Rock Band 3's Pro Guitar gameplay. His video review gives a balanced evaluation of the instrument as a controller and as a guitar, as well as an overview of RB3's Pro Guitar gameplay. As I recall, you can't embed links to other sites in a review here, but you can see that review on the YouTube "RoseOfJerichoRB" channel, or by using the YouTube clip IDs 85NomT87i7g (Part 1), OxvPun0-J-g (Part 2) and rTSQd-hh3NQ (Part 3). The channel also features a couple of clips of Matt playing some songs in RB3 on the Squier, with inset video of the rolling pro guitar charts.

I'm far from a professional (or even very experienced) guitarist, but I own a Squier and really like RB3 Pro Guitar. The game has some nice tutorials which will get you started (though nothing replaces working a live teacher) and is a very compelling way to practice. It will also give you a way to learn the note-for-note guitar and bass parts of quite a few songs (218 at this writing with more added every week).
