Product Description

The Squirrel brand origins date back to 1890 when it was started as the Austin T. Merrill Company in Massachusetts. From salting to roasting peanuts to chewy candy favorites, Squirrel Nut Company developed a loyal and enthusiastic customer base. It supplied candy and roasted nuts to the armed forces. The flagship product "Squirrel Nut Zippers"--vanilla, caramel and nut taffy--had an interesting beginning. It was named after an illegal drink during Prohibition. During the 1990's, a retro swing band named themselves "Squirrel Nut Zippers," and gave out the candy during their performances. 4.22 pounds. 240 pieces

After years of thinking these weren't made anymore my wife saw a program on TV that mentioned Squirrel Nut Zippers. Well, needless to say, I immediately went to our friends Amazon and did a search and found these delights once more. Made sure that I order two tubs of 240 pieces each (can never have enough backup of a favorite). They're good but seem to have less nut pieces than I remember. That's why a four rating rather than a five.

I well remember these Squirrel Nut Zippers in their original form from my childhood. Thought I would try them again since I still have a few of my own teeth remaining. The bits of nuts made a great difference between this candy in the 60's and this castrated recipe today. But it is a light, sweet and chewy caramel even if it has been altered, but it would be more descript to name them Eunuch Caramel Chews and let the customer know.

And...who names a band Squirrel Nut Zippers? ? You're screwing up Google searches for my fav treat.

I agree with the other reviewers, Necco has totally ruined a childhood favorite. Squirrel Nut Zippers are now no more than run-of-the-mill caramels. Also the 240 count are sticking to the wax paper. I wasn't going to mention that since I need the fiber but I thought you might want to know. BRING BACK THE NUTS.

I ate these as a child and there were a lot more peanuts in them then. I still enjoy them but bet they's sell a lot more if they hadn't cheapened them up.

I bought this item at least three time. I enjoy the tasty treat but the one compliant I have is that I wish it had more peanuts like yesteryear. It is still a great candy and it is addictive. I will most definatly buy more when my five pounder is done.

I used to buy these a million years ago. Then they disappeared until NECCO started making them again. They are almost as good as the ones I remember from my childhood. Not as many peanuts as before but they are still quite good.

Tasty, and a fun name. I have a group of friends that collect squirrelly items, and I serve these at parties for fun. They really are good, and amazon was the best deal I could find on them.
