Editorial Reviews

Product Description

Martha loves it when her father writes her in to his stories.

A young girl sits and listens, enthralled, to her father telling her the story of The Bestest Squish in the Whole Wide Universe. Sadly, he dies before he finishes his tale, so Martha lives out the rest of the story until the end, where the Bestest Squish in the Whole Wide Universe will happen.

Grant Sharkey's 'Squish' is a screen-novel (a screenplay written as a novel [or vice versa]) - with character, laughs and soul - it's the biggest budget indie film you may never see.

More About the Author

I've always loved the power of stories to blend in with the readers' lives, bringing new ideas and viewpoints into conversations and decision making. I've told stories in songs all around the world with my band Toupé and I've told stories on stage as part of my stand up comedy. I love using rhythm and pace to tell a story with.

What are the story about? They tend to be about finding the subtleties of the human condition (SQUISH was written whilst I was in a place where I'd lost my business [a bookshop] to the recession which was hurried along to me by my mother needing care and my relationship at the time crossed some very difficult boundaries...despite my own low self esteem, I still tried to be the best person I could be to everyone else. I wrote SQUISH as a way of expressing the lessons I'd learned about tolerance and patience and the ability to see all sides of a story)

HIPPLES is a minor piece with a big idea in it. I've had an idea for free, clean alternative energy production that, according to some brainy friends, actually works if you could build them. Whilst reading books about alternative energy I realised the whole industry is controlled by people wanting to make money out of it, who may want to kill me for saving the world. So I wrote a little story about me dying whilst trying to save the world.

My brain works like that.

Coming soon is a book I wrote 5 years ago (that I printed and sold at comedy gigs to make sure I had petrol to get around) called HANDS - a story about symbiosis, friendship and the singer/songwriter scene in my city. It was written quickly in a week when I was suffering badly from Carpal Tunnel Syndrome before getting steroid injections directly into them.

I rarely approach the big publishers with my work as I've seen the retail side of books too much to know it's worth pursuing for much longer. I wish it wasn't the case, but writing something that cannot be defined is the biggest no-no in this business, so I may as well risk everything on eBooks now.

It's a proper pleasure to meet you. Thank you for reading.
