Not a good game, but...,

Squishy Tank is not a good game. It's a puzzle game in which you tap on colored squares that form groups of 3 or more. It's fairly simplistic and, when it comes down to it, you can generally get by just by tapping randomly on the screen. It gets boring after a while, and there's this really annoying sound that the tanks make if you blow up enough at once. But, and this is important, it's entertaining. I'm not going to lie; I have a soft spot in my heart for wacky Japanese stuff, and that probably influences my opinion quite a bit. Regardless, this is a (simple) puzzle with a story. To be fair, the puzzle game (unlike, say, Puzzle Quest) has no depth whatsoever, and the story is this: The Squishy Tanks got a video game. Hooray! But wait, they keep getting blown up in their own game! RUN AWAY! Regardless, it's amusing, at least in short sessions. So, while it's not a good game, Squishy Tank is probably worth looking into. If you like puzzle games or wacky Japanese things, see if you can find it used or rent it. It's a good enough time waster, though not one I'd spend more than $10 on.

I picked up Squishy Tank since it seemed like a cute and fun puzzle game. While it is certainly cute, it's far from being fun due to the mind-numbing objectives of each stage in Story Mode which only consist of clearing a certain number of each of the 5 or so coloured blocks.I was masochistic enough to go through Story Mode until the first half of Chapter 3 -- there's 4 chapters in total -- hoping that the game would throw new obstacles or challenges at me somewhere along the way. Unfortunately, it never happened so I stopped playing. At least the cutscenes were sort of fun to watch. Too bad the player has to suffer through several stages of braindead objectives before reaching even one. Quest Mode is a little more interesting as the stage clear conditions aren't as inane as the ones in Story Mode. Each Quest Mode stage also unlocks apparel and accessories for the tank which can only be viewed and used under the Costume Mode in the Collection menu. The game also has Survival Mode which feels exactly like the first Mode -- that is, again, you're just playing to clear a certain quota of coloured blocks -- and Time Attack which requires the player to get as many points as he or she can before the timer runs out. Finally, there's 3 time-wasting mini games (obtained through the dreaded Story Mode unfortunately) and a Story Viewer that allows you to see all the cutscenes that you've unlocked in Story Mode. All in all, the game is not terrible -- it's just rather uninspired. So unless you're extremely adamant on getting every unlockable thing in this game, I would suggest that you ignore Story Mode completely to keep your brain cells healthy.

First, all the pseudo-military jargon in the tutorial gets old by the third step. It might appeal to a boy of ten, but I assume they were marketing this game to a wider audience. This is sort of a combination of your normal collapse game mixed with Zoo Keeper features mixed with some Bejeweled Twist features. Unfortunately, the combination is not a winning recipe. After a couple of hours of play my reaction was: Big deal! I'm done with it. After an hour of play my wife's reaction was: This is absolutely no fun at all. After that amount of time, 99% of the game play is: See three or more of the same color together? Tap on one of them. Repeat until level ends. Next level: See three or more of .... Well, you get the picture. Go buy something that's fun. Most anything will be better.
