2.0 out of 5 stars Hmm., July 1, 2006
This review is from: St. Augustine of Canterbury (Paperback)
A very thin book, for a price far too high. The information could have been more packed and made interesting, and have been worth the price. But it wasn't. There were only the barest, baldest details. And what there was was mostly hagiorphora, with overblown tales of the saints, primarily Augustine. Not that the miraculous can't occur, and that some don't experience more of the miraculous than others. But one needs a discriminating palate, and not simply swallowing wholesale every legend of a saint. That's the taste you get in this book. There is little here to help us understand what Augustine went through; there is nothing here to suggest any error in his ways or anything short of perfection. The book is constantly filled with comments like "Augustine probably would have viewed" or "The Pope would likely have seen"- with no evidence to indicate the author's suppositions.

I plan to give this book away.
