St. Francis of Assisi (1182-1226) is clearly the most beloved saint in the Roman Catholic Church. Pope Pius XI, for example, once said that "there was never anyone in whom there shone forth more vividly and who resembled more [closely] the image of Jesus Christ...than Francis." Indeed, many non-Catholics (e.g., Anglicans) - and even some atheists - also adorn their gardens with statues of the humble saint preaching to or blessing the animals. Francis's simple (though not simplistic) message of God's bountiful love for all creation as well as of His free offer of "peace and goodness" to every human being is, moreover, a much needed corrective to the false "gospel" of hate and condemnation practiced by some "Christians" today. In Saint Francis of Assisi, historian Ivan Gobry provides a much-needed and updated biography of the great saint for a new generation of readers, who may not be familiar with Saint Francis's life or teachings.

In this book, Gobry offers a comprehensive presentation of St. Francis's life, career, and teachings, one which is both informative yet highly readable. Saint Francis of Assisi is also balanced and well researched, correcting some of the myths surrounding this highly popular saint. Gobry, for example, convincingly presents his theory as to how the latter, who was baptized "Giovanni" (Anglicized to "John"), eventually came to be known as "Francesco" (Anglicized to "Francis"). Additionally, the author provides enough historical background to give context and texture to Francis's life, without bogging down the general reader with the intricacies of medieval politics and society.

This book, however, is not a dry "secular" biography of an important figure in world history.
