Book Description

September 18, 2001
1853. From the newly-discovered Philosophumena. From the Preface: The present Work consists of two Parts. The former contains a Dissertation on the Authorship of the newly-discovered Philosophumena and on the Life, Times and Works of the Writer, especially in reference to Christian Doctrine, and to the Early History of the Church, particularly of the Roman Church, with some application to the circumstances of our own age. The latter Portion of the Volume is occupied with the Historical Narrative, which is contained in the Philosophumena, concerning the Church of Rome in the first quarter of the Third Century, and is the most ancient and ample record, now extant, of the condition of that Church in that early age.
