Book Description

August 1, 2000
"St. John Style" is a collection of islanders favorite recipes.

Sun, sea, sand, glorious scenery and tropical breezes contribute to the perfect setting for hostesses to entain with creativity and charm on the beautiful island of St. John. Dinner parties at island homes are casual, yet often elegant affairs. beach picnics; seaside birthday, holiday parties and lunch aboard a boat anchored in a secluded cove are other popular ways to entertain on the island. All this done with very limited choices in grocery shopping, almost no specialty items, and sometimes even difficult in finding the basics.

"Five stop" shopping is typical on St. John. the meal has to be planned, and armed with a grocery list, you visit the first market where two of the main ingredients ar found, followed by a stop at all the other stores for the remaining ingredients. Only then do you realize that the key ingredients for your recipe cannot be found. This is when plan "B" goes into effect, and you end up with, hopefully, a new and creative version of the planned dish, or a very expensive spaghetti dinner ! Challenge, creativity, versatility and a sense of humor are necessary for cooking "St. John Style".

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally A Superb Local Recipe Book, July 11, 2001
By
Allan (Los Angeles, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: St. John Style (Hardcover)
Finally a great recipe book dedicated to the tastes of St John USVI. Normally the Carib recipe books have a drip and drabble from all of the islands. This wonderful book lends itself only to the recipes of St John. All directions are easy to read and easy to duplicate for the novice to the gourmet cook.

Nice thing about this book is that our daughter is marrying there soon and now we know what to get for all of our good friends to take home as a remembrance of the wedding and a remembrance of a lot of paradise.

4.0 out of 5 stars Yes, it is difficult to shop for ingredients in the islands!, January 13, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: St. John Style (Hardcover)
Having lived in the islands 20 years myself, I certainly understand five-stop shopping. The Caribbean recipes in this books are fresh, exuberant and bursting with exotic island flavor. If you like this book, you'll really love Angela Spenceley's brand new book "A Taste of the Caribbean" filled with hundreds of traditional recipes and the new, exciting Caribbean cuisine. A must for any good cookbook library.

5.0 out of 5 stars Saw it, Bought it, LOVE IT!, November 19, 2008
This review is from: St. John Style (Hardcover)
We took a vacation trip to the island of St. John for my son's 13th birthday. In the town of Cruz Bay is a fun little store called St. John Spice, and that's where I saw this cookbook. There were a number of books there, but this one caught my fancy since it was truly dedicated to St. Johnian's recipes. So I bought it, and took it home to the midwest. Do I cook from it? You bet! Do I like it...no...I LOVE IT!!! The recipes are delicious, fun, and full of great memories. Friends and family that are served meals from it enjoy them so much. My favorites are Grilled Ginger Island Chicken, Mango Coconut Bread, and Cocoloba Rum Bars...mmmmm! Of course, you can buy the book online...but I highly recommend a trip to St. John instead.
