5.0 out of 5 stars A Brilliant Pairing of St. John's Wort with A Chinese Depression Formula, January 24, 2010

As a practitioner of Oriental Medicine, I frequently give the Chinese formula Xiao Yao Wan to depressed patients, particularly those with what we call Liver Qi Stagnation (a depression with "stuckness", often accompanied by PMS and menstrual pain when in women, accompanied with internal and emotional obstacles to the free flow of qi and blood.) Xiao Yao Wan has a wide variety functions and the herbs help you flow around obstacles rather than being blocked.

I think of St. John's wort as a distillation of sunshine- anyone who has seen the riotous yellow and red hypericum blossoms in summer can see how the red resins would bring in that quality of warm lightness. Not only an antidepressant, this herb helps with nerve pain, healing wounds and lifting the spirit.

Herbalist Michael Tierra brilliantly paired these herbs together to make an antidepressant formula for those who are stuck and depressed. As a formula with ingredients that deal with blood flow, the functioning of the liver and the ability of the digestive process to extract nutrients (we make 85% of our serotonin in the gut) as well as with serotonin and norepinepheron reuptake inhibitions and the 23 other antidepressant functions of St. John's wort, it performs brilliantly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Traded my worry for wort, July 22, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
An excellent product. It took about a week to start working. Now i'm on my third bottle. 3.5 months later. I take four in the morning with a light breakfast. No problems with digesting them. My mood has improved from i'd say a 3/10 to an even 8/10. I'm at about the normal amount of miserableness we all experience. The unhappiness has left me.

I was looking for a legal alternative to the one very cheap herb which does make me happy (iboga).

This isn't cheap, but it is legal. And it definitely does something. I think rather than make me happy, tho, what it does is kind of make me less emotional in general. More of a robot, but also it feels like I'm swimming a bit. I sort of liked it but the GI issues were not worth it. Anybody want my mostly full bottle? It's yours free.
