Book Description

August 1, 1998
DISCOVER NATURE'S MIRACLE HERB FOR TREATING DEPRESSION. . .AND MORE St. John's wort is the first herb shown to be natural mood booster. If you are one of the millions of people suffering from mild to moderate depression, this antidepressant found in nature could be for you. For the last fifteen years, St. John's wort has been widely used in Europe, where it is the physician's first line of treatment for depression. More recently, American and German researchers found that St. John's wort outperformed prescription drugs in treating depression--without the unpleasant side effects. What's more, the benefits extend beyond mood elevation to boost energy and improve overall health. ST. JOHN'S WORT: THE MIRACLE HERB provides the answers you need about this amazing natural remedy that has become the most popular herb in the United States. What exactly is St. John's wort and how does it work? What are the symptoms of mild depression? How is St. John's wort used to relieve pain, anxiety, postpartum blues, insomnia, and PMS? What are the common physical conditions that can be helped by St. John's wort? How does St. John's wort help people lose weight? Are there side effects to St. John's wort? What is the correct dosage, and in what form should St. John's wort be taken? How long will St. John's wort take to work? AND MUCH MORE!

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Now that St. John's wort is being touted as a safe herbal alternative to antidepressant drugs, a lot of people have been taking it without really educating themselves about its effects or even its possible side effects. But despite the fact that you can buy it in any drugstore or health-food emporium without a prescription, this is a serious mood-altering product that shouldn't be gobbled up haphazardly.

St. John's Wort: Nature's Mood Booster, a thick paperback written by University of Pittsburgh psychiatry professor Michael E. Thase, provides everything you need to know about the herb in an easy-to-use question-and-answer format. The book discusses mood problems in general, from "the blues" to major depression, and helps show why St. John's wort might (or might not) provide an answer to an individual person's troubles. It also provides complete data on side effects, how to purchase or even make your own St. John's wort remedies, and the other uses for what is in fact an extremely versatile herb. Still, even though the information he provides here is pretty comprehensive, Thase understands that even mild depression is a complicated thing. He provides many resources for learning more on the subject, and warns that even with this book in hand, the best way to decide whether St. John's wort is right for you is by talking to your doctor. --Ben Kallen
