I don't remember a whole heck of a lot from college chemistry, other than clover leaves are 16% oxylic acid - but I do remember a thing or two about surface area. If you swallow one aspirin (or any other medication), that is flat and round, your stomach acid and other digestive juices can only attack it and dissolve it on so many sides. When you break the pill in half before swallowing, the break-down time will be cut in half. Likewise, if you cut it in 4 pieces, the affect will take only 25% of the normal time for relief.
Aspirin by nature is a bitter pill - so most people would prefer to swallow these as quick as possible and avoid chewing at all costs - but when you chew this (or any aspirin) into hundreds of tiny tiny specks, the relief rushes through your body at break-neck speed. The orange flavoring is essential to help cancel out the bitter taste - but I have to ask why they have not come out with a grape flavor - something less bitter. Fake orange flavoring is so freakin' awful. In a way, it's akin to putting a regular aspirin on your tongue, letting it dissolve (without gagging) in your mouth, then using a packet of Sweet-n-Low to "cancel" out the bitter taste. The 81mg dosage is a favorite of heart patients as a daily preventative of clotting. Too much aspirin can cause problems with the kidneys and the eyes, but an 81mg dosage is "just right" for daily therapy.
