Product Description

Product Description

On May 16, 1703, Czar Peter the Great lays the foundation for the first building in St. Petersburg. Quickly, impressive buildings are erected that are ever more grand and beautiful. Such buildings bring glory to the aristocracy and victory points to the players. But you need traders to bring the rubles necessary for all this magnificence, otherwise, the buildings are empty and bare. The competition never sleeps and may grab needed cards right from under your nose. This game is for 2 to 4 players and takes about 45 minutes to play.

From the Manufacturer

The New Society adds 36 cards with purple dots to distinguish them and the parts to allow 5 players to play. In addition, the game adds several cards and provides other cards to replace those in the original game. The Banquet adds 12 cards with gold dots to distinguish them. The deck includes 3 "normal" cards and 9 cards that offer special abilities very different from those of workers, buildings, and aristocrats. Each expansion must be played with the basic game. Players may also play both expansions together with the basic game. Of course, creative players may choose to use some, but not all of each to make their own game and play

Adding a 5th player, a new class of builders, plus many special cards make this game a lot of fun. It completely changes how you play this game, and that makes it a lot of fun. Before adding the expansion I almost always beat my wife in 2 player games, but adding this completely changed how I had to play the game and now I haven't figured out how to beat her yet.

My only complaint is that the price is too high. $20-25 for some cards and a wood token is just wrong, but it does make a new game so it is still worth it.

This is one of our favorite games! It is definately about strategy but some luck and order, but everyone can have a different stragety and you'll be surprised on what works and doesn't but can flip and totally work the next game. The first time is a bit confusing but you get the hang of it quick! Best with 4 people or so!

My husband and I really like St. Petersburg. It is right up there with Carcassonne, maybe even better. The rules can be a bit confusingly written in a few spots, but once you get the hang of it you will like this game and play it often.

St. Petersburg is a game that I can say many wonderful things about, but in the end, it falls just short of greatness. So I figured the expansion would push the game over the top and into my top 10. This expansion DOES improve the game, yet does nothing to address the game's few shortcomings.

What it does for the game; A new class of worker (green cards) called `New Farmers' are introduced. They cost 9 Rubles, but give a Victory Point as well as the standard 3 coins. There are also new buildings, aristocrats, and upgrades. There is also new cards that give you one-time benefits such as taking a card from a discard pile or removing a card from your hand. These cards add a bunch of little perks to the game without really being `game changers'...they are welcome additions, indeed. Also very nice is the fact that all you need to add a 5th player is included.

What it doesn't do: The source for most rubles is workers, and most Victory Points come from Buildings and Aristocrats - that remains unchanged. This means that there are still very few paths to victory. This is painfully evident in the 2P game. The overarching strategy is to buy workers as cheaply as possible to get money, then use that money to generate VP via buildings, aristocrats, or both. The only issue is who can do it better and/or faster.

What you should do: If you like the St. Petersburg base game, go for this expansion (which can be a bit overpriced, so shop around). This expansion will add some fun elements to the game. But if you're looking for something that addresses the shortage of different strategic paths, realize that this expansion does nothing to really fill that gap.

Card backs of expansion cards are different from original game. This isn't an impossible thing to work around, but it is still a huge oversight for a game expansion!

Our family really enjoys playing this game! Once learned, it goes quickly and this expansion piece adds to the enjoyment with additional cards.
