Although it weighs-in at closer to 16 pounds, rather than the 6.5lbs shown in the specs here and on the mfg's web site. Obvious misprint until you look at the shipping weight. But it is a good tripod, though a bit fragile. One has to be careful with the die-cast aluminum head. I have already broken mine somehow and welded it back with some of the mix-together expoxy. This has made it hard to raise and lower. Something is out of alignment or bent. Stabila does not sell a hardcase for it so I recommend improvising with some 9" PVC pipe to protect it from something falling on it and bending the elevator shafts are aluminum legs. Learn from my mistake. The unit sets up quickly, the legs slide easily and the level bubble is helpful. I use a self-leveling rotary laser. It is so nice, in most situations, to be able to adjust the laser to batterboard height thus eliminating the use of a rod with the sensor. You can simply use the sensor because there is no offset. Then the next day or the next week you can go back, raise the laser level to the benchmark height and recheck batterboards, again without a rod for offset. This would likely work with a sight level too but possibly with more difficulty. Not a bad value. Other mfgs elevator tripods are in the $300+ range. Even their add-on elevators are almost as much as the Stabila.

This tripod didn't last one day on our jobsite. It weighs more than 15 lbs, with most of the weight high in the steel elevator shaft. On the way from the truck to the site, one of the cheap plastic clips on the carrying strap at the heavy end of the tripod broke. The top plate hit concrete sidewalk from about three feet. After that, the crank wouldn't raise or lower the elevator at all. It froze and then stripped. Save yourself fifty dollars and buy Stabila's standard tripod. We did.

I have not had a chance to use it at job site yet. But I took a test with a rotary laser. It is an excellent tool. Price is much lower than Hilti, but there is no much difference in quality. It would be a very helpful if they could make it to be able to lower the height for interior carpentry work, ex. chair rail, base cabinet, etc. Hilti makes low boy,but it's very expensive. Also I don't have room for two tripods to carry. I wish I would like to get a multi-purpose kind.

This tripod was attractive to me at first because of the price and features. I also own six Stabila levels of various sizes and love them. So, I bought one and used it. It is very cheaply built. I am a contractor, but take very good care of my tools. They cost a lot and help me make money. Why wouldn't I, right. The plastic clips on the carry strap broke day two. Luckily it fell and dinged me in the leg or I would have suffered the same fate as the other writers. I went to a hardware store and bought some make a strap parts. Wider strap, stronger clips. The following week one of the chains pulled out of the legs. This time I ran into a Stabila rep at my local hardware store. He gave me a number to call and said everything would be made right. Ha, I knew better, five calls over three months and no return call. Again, went to the hardware store and fixed it myself. Have Stabila call me, I'll give them a parts list so they can start building it right.

This tripod is good for what is meant to be.
take care of it. Don't drop it, or let roll around in back of truck.I hang mine in a home made wood box from ceiling of my tool body. great for the price, if you need an elevating tripod. Well made.Sturdy I've used mine straight out of box, and I use it often.

I'm a general contractor and own many Stabila levels. They stand out as the best so I had high expectations for this tripod. It is incredibly useful to have a tripod that you can wind up and down so you can lock into your benchmarks and not have to worry about the math. We use it for concrete, framing, siding, windows, wainscot, etc. The only one I had seen previously was by Hilti but it was over 400.
The Stabila at under 150 seemed like a sure thing but when it arrived it didn't survive the shipping very well. A part had fallen off and the box was damaged. When I set it up, the crank would not move the center rod up and down, the bubble level in the stand wasn't even close and the top wasn't flat. Seemed like this was made by a different factory than the levels. Sent it back and got the elevator tripod by CST/Berger. The Berger is not quite up to the Hilti either, but for the price (-150) and my purposes, it does the job. Stabilia needs better quality control and better boxing for this one.

While I think Stabila could have paid a little more attention to the quality of some of the minor compoments, this tripod works perfectly. If your using an optical level or laser level this tripod is the only way to go for repetitive setups.

This elivator tripod worked great with a rotary laser used for a drop ceiling. It can be adjusted to the height you want leveled then your set to work.
