Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

As a precocious 14-year-old, Stacie Orrico made her music biz debut with Genuine, a remarkably soulful release that went gold without much fanfare other than that generated by a limited supporting role on tour with Destiny’s Child. Now all of 16, Orrico shows more youthful moxy in a self-titled collection of upbeat pop and more R&B-influenced tracks. Her expressive vocals continue to belie the fact that she’s merely a teenager, as she draws inspiration from idols ranging from Ella Fitzgerald to Lauryn Hill. Orrico also co-wrote eight of her release’s 12 tracks, including hit single "Stuck," an ode to school-age love. Certainly Orrico leans heavy on the talents of producers Tedd T, Dallas Austin, and the Underdogs, who combine to give the exuberant youngster a silky-smooth sound. But for critics who would label Orrico as another propped-up teen artist, check out her starkly revealing ballad "Strong Enough," which shows us a young girl on the edge seeking wholeness in her spirituality. That genuineness, combined with a wealth of vocal talent, makes Stacie Orrico someone to watch. Michael Lyttle

5.0 out of 5 stars Stacie Rocks With Her Sophomore Album!, May 12, 2003
By
This review is from: Stacie Orrico (Audio CD)
Not being a Christian, I was hesistant to buy Stacie's CD due to the fact that she has been classified as a Christian singer. After listening to the tracks online, I knew I had to get this CD. Here's a breakdown:

1. Stuck - This is the first single which is currently burning up the charts over at TRL. Very poppy and upbeat. Stacie sings about being stuck in a relationship even though she knows she should move on. 5/5

2. More To Life - Very upbeat, written by singer Lucy Woodward. Stacie has said that she wants this to be her next single. Great song for all ages, all about going after your dreams and not settling for second best. 5/5

3. Bounce Back - Upbeat with a sort of R&B, pop feel going. Stacie sings about not letting things get you down. 4/5

4. I Promise - Ballad but not the annoyingly slow kind. Stacie sings about promising to always be there. 4/5

5. Instead - Great song that really makes you think. Stacie sings about seeing a homeless man, among other things, and thinking that maybe he's not really homeless when asking for money and ignoring him. But then she wonders what if it was her in his place? 5/5

5. Security - Great upbeat song. 5/5

7. Hesitation - This track is one of the few with a prominent Christian overtone as Stacie sings, "Why the hesitation, God is ever waiting" but still really good and can apply to anyone, no matter what religion. Strong, upbeat pop. 5/5

8. Strong Enough - Slow ballad but very beautiful. Again, Stacie talks about being strong enough to get through things. 5/5

9. I Could Be The One - The best track on this CD. Very poppy, dance oriented. Christian overtones as Stacie sings about crashing down but then God showed her the way. Very cool song! 6/5

10. Maybe I Won't Look Back - Another AWESOME track! Mid-tempo. Stacie sings about how a friend called her and sounded down but she told her she couldn't talk because she had something else to do. So now she's not very proud of the way she has lived life today and sings about how to be better. Very cool message and a great track! 6/5

11. Tight - Great clubbing song. Tight club beat at the end. 5/5

12. That's What Love's About - Mid-tempo, R&B vibe. Nice way to end the CD. 4/5

So if you are hesitating about getting the CD due to the fact that Stacie has been classified as Christian, don't! Go out and get this CD today. I guaranteee it won't leave your CD player for a LONG time; I know mine hasn't yet!

5.0 out of 5 stars love it, June 11, 2003
This review is from: Stacie Orrico (Audio CD)
I just got this cd yesterday and I love all the tracks on this cd. I love the cool R & B sound, its very edgy. Some songs are about relationships, others are about faith without being pushy, its all good though.

This is a great mainstream debut and I'm so glad that I got it. The sound is edgy and the lyrics are more mature. Its great. I recommend it, I'm in my 20s and I like it. Stacie used to be in the CCM (Contemporary Christian Music) business, and this is her mainstream cd since she's trying to crossover. Anyway its obvious that some songs are subtly about her Christian faith.

1. Stuck-this song is about a girl being stuck in a relationship, even though the relationship isn't healthy she still loves the guy, hence the lyrics "I love you but I hate you...I feel like such a fool, I'm stuck on you."

2. (There's gotta be) More to Life- talks about having more depth to life, that there's gotta be more to life than what one sees around them. Even though Stacie doesn't come out & say it on this cd, I'm sure that she's probably talking about God & her Christian faith.

3. Bounce Back-This song can have different meanings to many people but to me it just meant about trusting & moving on in life.

4. I Promise-This song is about being there for someone no matter what.

5. Security-this song is about someone who once was alone but has found their "security" in God. I really liked it.

6. Instead-this is a deep song. Its about putting yourself into someone else's shoes and understanding their pov, its about being kind to others and reaching out to them. I've never heard anything this deep coming out of a teen pop singer or any pop singer.

7. Hesitation-this song is a bit more bold and it talks about not hesitating anymore and putting your trust in God.

8. Strong Enough-this is a slow ballad and its basically about God being strong enough to bring you out of whatever you're going through.

9. I could be the one-this song talks about how God can use anyone to accomplish His will.

10. Maybe I won't look back-We all make mistakes and just because we made them, we shouldn't beat up ourselves over them. The song talks about having the right priorities, and Stacie Orrico sings a bit about trusting God and since He forgives, maybe she won't have to look back at all her past mistakes.

11. Tight-this song is about being "tight" with God, its also a cool party song.

12. That's What Love's About-this song talks about what love is. That love is all about being kind & helping each other out.

This album comes to me as a big surprise. First I thought Stuck was a great song, but it didn't make it worth buy the album, then I got this as a present, and wow!, to my surprise, I love the easy goin' songs in this album, More To Life is an instant hit!, I Could Be The One a fast track with motivation, Strong Enough such a delightful ballad that showcases Orrico at her best. This album is memorable and hopefully will get promoted in the radio airwaves cuz it deserves it.
