Inevitable comparison to Ryan Adams? Whiskeytown was a good band, but if you were part of the alternative country movement in the beginning, you know they were as derivative as they come. See "Sweetheart of the Rodeo" - The Byrds - "Manassas" Stephen Stills - "Reach for the Sky" - Cowboy - Everything by Gram Parsons, as well as the first post-Parsons Burrito Brothers album.

I don't mean to put Whiskeytown down and am not. I must have listened to "Faithless Street" a hundred times. But, if you want to talk voices, Ryan Adams wishes he could sing like Thad Cockrell. "Stack of Dreams" is one of the best country CD's of the year. Songs like "How Far Can I Drive Tonight" and "He Set Me Free" are absolute country masterpieces. For the past six weeks, "Stack of Dreams" has been the most requested CD at The House of the New Lost Blues.

I'm "very" encouraged by all these four-star ratings. Means I've missed quite a bit of good music.

This is one of the the best country records I ever listen to over and over again and I hope this artist will recording many more records.................He is a raising star !

What a voice! What songs! The real deal indeed.

His song "Why" is an all time favorite.

At once traditional, but not hackneyed, artists that Thad are what we need these days. There is nothing fake about this album. Recorded in a week with Chris Stamey (who has alos produced outstanding albums by Caitlin Cary and Alejandro Excovedo - both worht your money).

Forget all these Ryan Adams comparisons. Thad Cockrell makes alt-country's resident singer/songwriter/egomaniac pale(r) by comparison. Think 'South Mouth' era Robbie Fulks and you're getting warmer. Cockrell's got a serious country voice, better than any of the empty hats out there now. In a perfect world, he'd be married to Faith Hill and topping the country charts.

I guess the comparison to Ryan Adams of Whiskeytown is inevitable, complete with a duet from Whiskeytowns' own Caitlin Cary, but to pass on the warm voice of Thad Cockrell for this reason alone would be misguided. Yes, his voice could pass for that of Adams on just a pack a day, but the rich sound of Cockrell and the starlite country band can easily warm your cup of coffee. Plenty of good thing's to come from this start up, no doubt.
