It's true - I called the manufacturer...,

Yes, although marketing materials and even the manufacturer's website shows CLEAR transparent drawers in the photos, and it even states there that the product features "See-through drawers for quick identification of contents", they are NOT TRANSPARENT. I asked a customer service rep (Stack-On Products Company, www.stack-on.com, Ph: 1-847-526-1611 Toll Free: 1-800-323-9601) and she said that they are translucent, like a plastic milk jug (which is usually made of polyethylene), and have been this way for quite a while. She did not apologize or explain the false representation of the product when I mentioned it, which I must assume will continue uncorrected. It seems that there would be a lot of complaints and returns, tho??!I have 6 units (DS-60) from about 10 years back. They have clear polystyrene drawers, but some have become milky-white opaque where morning sunlight comes in through a window and shines on them. The others are still clear and doing fine. But I needed see-through drawers and was about to order two replacement cabinets to get the drawers. *Thank you, Amazon Reviewers* for calling this to my attention:-) One may, BTW, order REPLACEMENT DRAWERS (No, you can not get any 'old' clear ones), by calling them: $0.50/ea for small drawers like the DS-60 uses, and $1/ea for the larger size, plus priority shipping $4.05 for up to 10 drawers (as of 2/2011). A note regarding the two plastic types: The discontinued polystyrene (clear) is more rigid, cracks more easily, can be easily repaired by gluing (is not resistant to many solvents), and labels will adhere easily and stay on over time, possibly even being difficult to remove. With polyethylene (and polypropylene), the opposite is true in every case: These plastics are naturally milky-white translucent, they are flexible, not easily cracked or glued (are quite resistant to most chemicals), and labels will need quite a strong and durable adhesive to stay on over time. Paper labels and labels meant for use on paper, for example, would probably not adhere very well, especially in a warm environment.

I use several StackOn products for small parts storage. The "flimsy" bins are actually quite nice, and the translucency hasn't been an issue. Some of the older, stiffer bins developed cracks over time (several years) - the new ones should not have that issue. If you need labels the 1.75x0.5" Avery address labels work great! I can queue up a sheet of 80 and print them out, then apply them at will. The only con about the design is the drawers are a little wobbly inside the frame - you should find a different solution if you'll be carrying this around your shop frequently as the drawers may open in transit.

Falsely pictured on internet and on product!,

I've searched everywhere for a unit like this with CLEAR drawers, and was excited when I saw these online. The pictures clearly show the drawers to be clear, not opaque/cloudy. When the product arrived, the drawers were opaque/cloudy and not the clear see-through quality shown in the pictures online. Also, the picture on the actual product is also false advertising! It's too bad--I was in a bind and needed to use it, so I couldn't return it. I then went to my local Home Depot, because I saw online that they had some--I physically went into the store to check them. Sure enough, same thing--falsely pictured on even the product itself. What's strange is that at some point, the drawers must have been crystal clear, because they obviously got a good picture of them! Maybe they've since changed their manufacturing to a cheaper material, but they need to update their marketing materials. In addition to that major objection, I don't like the dividers that came with this. They are molded into the back supports and you have to twist or cut them off. That leaves very little material across the back of the unit for stability (it doesn't really affect stability, but it's just cheap looking). And also, the dividers are then not perfectly straight and they don't give you enough to divide even half of the drawers. I hate to say, I'm very disappointed in this product.

AWESOME FOR CRAFTS, TOOLS AND EVERYTHING ELSE YOU CAN THINK OF!,

I am recently getting a craft room (out of my old office) and I am trying to reorganize all my litttle embellishments. You would be amazed at how they add up so quickly and i was keeping them in bead keepers...which are fine and do the job, however, storage wise, they don't look very pleasing when they are all different sizes AND they only hold so many compartments (usually 18) so I often have to split collections up etc and stack them up and side by side, which take up alot of room.I had one or two holders for charms, one for brads, one for eyelets, one for sequins, and one for flowers, etc...and that was just the tip of the iceburg, so imagine how many things would be stacked on one another. When I got this thing, I thought it would be too handyman looking and heavy. I was wrong. It is made out of sturdy plastic. The drawers are sturdy but have a little bit of give to them, which, in my opinion makes it better, as if you find that you accidentally drop the drawer on the floor, whether empty or full, it will not break or crack, unlike other plastic type of storage items. The whole unit itself is very light to pick up (Which is nice to be able to pick up and move around)and yet it is very sturdy, it also has spots on the back of it, so that you can hang it on the wall (which I will be doing). The drawers are very large and I would definitely suggest the dividers with the purchase of this, because it doubles your storage ability nicely and neatly. This is an amazing product and i have already recommended it to several of my craft friends, who were looking for storage solutions. All in all, I love it. And I may be purchasing another one in the future, as my collection grows (you never know :-)

Handy little unit. I use it for sorting and storing my small stuff. It's in use every day and works out great. The drawers are not flimsy and they are clear. I use cut pieces of chipboard for the separators in each drawer. I did not buy them.

I bought one of these to store a wide variety of coins. It has good sized trays to store several various items in it but is not made to be fully loaded in my opinion. I have it about 1/2 full of coins and the top part is already bowing a bit. If you have something lighter to store in it, it would work absolutely great. Anything heavier than a bunch of coins is out of the question. Hope I'll be able to fill it up.

Nice product however, it does not come with drawer dividers, you have to order them separately. For the price they should come with the dividers. They should also let you know the dividers are extra and offer them as an add-on item to the sale so you can place a single order and not pay for shipping twice.

I gave this product 3 stars because it is not as good as previous generations of the D60s I purchased at Walmart a few years ago. The frame is adequately sturdy and durable, but the drawers are now made of a different grade of plastic that feels flimsy, is not fully transparent, has only one slot for a divider rather than the usual three, and my Avery labels will not properly adhere to them. Also, the cabinet does NOT include dividers, but does provide a small note advising that they may be purchased separately (!). In the advertisements, these look exactly the same as the legacy models ... so be advised.

Deceptive picture (READ),
By wb "willowbeet" (Orlando, FL United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Stack-On DS-60 60 Drawer Storage Cabinet (Tools & Home Improvement)
The drawers are cheap soft opaque plastic, as opposed to what is shown in the picture, which shows hard clear plastic. I find these cheap opaque drawers flimsy and much hard to view contents and I suspect the sides could warp over time as well. The drawer stops are also weak and there is a lot of wiggle in the drawers when opened.I bought the 39 drawer and the 60 drawer cabinet by stack-on, and while in concept these are perfect sizes for my needs, I've returned them in search for better quality drawers (as well as a more durable body.) ****** I originally gave this 3 stars, but since my 60 and 39 drawer StackOn Storage Cabinet reviews keep getting deleted somehow, and thus reset the dozens of "helpful" votes acquired since 2007 and its 'displayed first' status, it now gets 2 stars because I'm no longer feeling as generous. I resubmitting this deleted review in 2010 (I am updating this in 12/11), and ironically the original review date of 10/1/07 is displayed (?!?!?). This is the same behavior that happened when I resubmitted my review on the 39-drawer unit after it was deleted. Needless to say, 4 years later, the product description still has the deceptive picture alluded to in my original submission 4 years ago. ****** |
