Excellent Low-Profile Safe,

This review is from: Stack-On QAS-1304 Low Profile Quick Access Safe with Electronic Lock (Tools & Home Improvement)
This low-profile safe is designed primarily for holding handguns. However, you can use it for just about anything else (e.g., jewelry, medication, etc.). It uses four AA batteries for keypad use (key "beep" sounds are on by default, but this can be turned off). It also includes 2 keys for access, in case the batteries run down before you change them (a red light will warn you when batteries are low). One of the really nice features about this safe is the keypad security: if you enter the combo incorrectly three times, you get locked out for 30 seconds. Enter the combo three more times incorrectly, and you get locked out for 5 minutes. If you're depending on this safe for quick access to your pistol, be sure you enter your combo correctly within three tries. The safe can be mounted with or without a mounting plate. The mounting place is nice when you're planning to take the safe with you (e.g., traveling in your car). If you don't plan on taking it anywhere, I'd recommend just bolting it down (by using the 4 holes on the bottom, or top-mounting via the 4 holes on the top). Although the safe comes with mounting hardware (screws and nuts), I found the screws too short, plus, I prefer one-way security screws and security nuts (purchased at local hardware store). The safe is also approved by the Department of Justice (DOJ) for meeting certain safety specs. Highly recommended.

Decent low profile safe,

I purchased this product to safely store and conceal a handgun in a night stand. The low profile fits nicely into a small to medium size drawer. The unit is easy to program and provides reasonable quick access. The unit's features and construction are of decent value for the attractive price. The unit comes with a mounting plate but I would not consider this an anti-theft safe as it could likely be opened with a few tools and a little effort.

Battery cover is flimsy and falls off, then it quits working,

I like it except for the flimsy and inadequate battery cover. If you close it firmly a few times, the weight of the batteries pushes the battery cover off of the inside of the cover, then the batteries lose their connection and the buttons quit working, forcing you to use the key. Poor design of this part. If the battery cover was strong enough to hold the batteries in place, I would have given it a 5. Guess I could make my own cover, but I shouldn't have to. And when you are depending on it for quick access, you don't need it to fail.

I would have given it 5 starts , but the mount that it can be released from is kinda pointless. Thats the only design flaw. I have mine mounted to a very heavy nightstand . The safe sits bed level ( top ) between my nightstand and bed. Gives my quick access to my .45s. could be a little wider so an adult hand can fit in it easier

Decent safe, but useless to store a firearm,

I'm giving this safe a 2 star review. If I had purchased this for anything other than storing a firearm, it would have received at least 4 stars. Let me explain the good points ...For this price point, you get a decent safe. It is relatively well constructed, includes a mounting plate and has some "smart" electronics built in. The electronics will provide a temporary lock out after a few unsuccessful attempts and a longer lock out period after that. I like this feature a lot as it will slow down someone (read a child) trying to guess the access code. Yes there are a lot of plastic parts, and they are a little flimsy, but this is not a $300 safe. You are getting what you should expect at this price point. This safe would be excellent to store small valuables or documents that you wanted to be tucked away in a hidden location. Perhaps the extra wide version would be better ... But I would not recommend this for storing a home defense pistol. The biggest issue with this safe is the opening is way too narrow to fit a handgun AND your hand. You can either fit the handgun OR your fist, but not both at the same time. And this really is a shame since it would be a great safe if it were not for this design issue. I consider myself an average person, so it's not that I'm trying to stuff a pair of gargantuan bear paws in this thing. The only way I could get my pistol in this safe was to handle it with two hands and that was very cumbersome. And getting it out was even worse. Noway will I handle a loaded firearm in this manner. One issue contributing to this is the mounting location. Mounting it to the ground does not leave enough clearance to have the door swing open all the way and clear the opening. Thus you do have part of the door competing for space. I did try mounting in different positions, but even when the door could fully open I still did not have enough clearance to get my hand and pistol in / out of the safe. Again, this is a good safe at this price point, but due to the narrow opening it is useless for storing a home defense pistol. I can not recommend this unit to anyone for this purpose.

ELECTRONIC LOCK?!!,

This product seemed to be well made at first, shortly after reprograming the combination I found out the door would not always open on the first try, sometimes not at all untill I used the back up key. Definatly not a good situation if being used for a defensive handgun as I intended. I also realized that if you shut the door a little too hard, the batteries fall out and you then have to use the back up key. So much for electric combinations.

and it's a great product. The reviews were correct, the batteries fall out if the door is not handled carefully. I fixed it by taping the battery cover around the edges and have had no problem. Very easy to use.

Stack-on makes a good product. I used the Amazon feedback as part of my decision to purchase. I have had no problem with the battery door falling off, or with battery life. The unit operates as advertised and functions very well. I did not use the mounting plate, but saved it for future use in a different installation. Everything was included in the box and it installed in about 20 minutes.I like that it can be installed rite-side-up or up-side-down, this allows the door to swing open, in a direction best for the user. Has no effect on the opening, combo or key, at all. Good price, fast shipping and secure. Combo lock a snap to use and user friendly.

I bought this safe largely because the price was right. I have been very happy with the options and security it offers. I especially like the ability to use both an electronic lock, and having a key backup. The safe feels very sturdy - as does the locking mechanism. Fits great in my closet.

I modified this item and installed a cable to anchor it to the wall. Works good and dependable. Stock batteries haven't died yet!
