5.0 out of 5 stars Authentic Sound - a must-have!, December 22, 2009

This review is from: Stack-o-Tracks [Vinyl] (Vinyl)
This is one of several recent Beach Boys vinyl reissues from Capitol. Some of the albums (Sunflower, Surf's Up) have the "newly remastered for vinyl" sticker, while others (Today!, Summer Days, Pet Sounds) boast a sticker that simply says "faithfully restored." The sound on this one is clean and clear, all the original artwork and 16-page song book has been preserved, and the 180 gram vinyl has a nice, substantial feel.

The sound on this Stack-O-Tracks release is just like it appears on the double-album CD: a mix of mono and stereo backing tracks. Although the front cover says "STEREO," the bottom of the back cover has a rather misleading disclaimer, "The original monophonic recordings have been electronically enhanced by a brilliant two-channel effect for today's stereo phonographs." This would tend to indicate the terrible fake-stereo treatment that Capitol "duophonic" records used to get, but fortunately there is no fake stereo on this one - just authentic, crisp mono or stereo.

For those wondering, yes, this Stack-O-Tracks reissue includes the important 16-page song book. The book is the best reason to own this LP, complete with annotated multi-staff piano-style sheet music with lyrics, guitar chords, etc. On "In My Room," even the harp notes that begin on the bass clef, extend to a treble clef A and then back to the bass clef are shown - like an inverted letter V. All kinds of instruments are noted, such as "organ solo," "vibes," "drums," etc. "God Only Knows" includes the intro French horn notes and even the "wood block" notation. Guitar chords are written above the treble clef (such as the "F#M7" chords that appear on "God Only Knows." Inside the gatefold cover are finger positions for guitar chords on one side, and black & white Beach Boy photos on the other side.

These Capitol reissues are a must-have - perfect for vinyl enthusiasts, collectors, and anyone who wants the album artwork in something larger than the tiny CD liner note size. The sound is beautiful - every bit as good as on the Beach Boys double-album CDs, if not better. Plus the packaging and original artwork. I own them all. There's nothing like opening a brand new LP and enjoying the sound of virgin vinyl. You can't go wrong with the albums in this series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Fun Album, July 24, 2007
This review is from: Stack O Tracks (Audio CD)
They are at a party playing mostly acoustic guitars and bongo drums. They sing some Beatles tunes as well as their own. They have allot of fun on this and it's an unusual album.
It says instrumental but they do sing and they sing acapella's too that's where the other tracks are. There are 2 different albums and one does have 20+ tracks

I bought this CD originally when I was in junior high, to accompany me while I practiced my saxophone (I preferred to practice to Beach Boys music over the school fight song). Anyway, it's also good for karaoke. However, be careful listening to the previous reviewer, who either can't count or has a different CD. There are 15 tracks on the CD, which last I checked is *not* over 20.
