Well written book. Very clear instructions with a LOT of illustrations -- how to start to finish. Author also added humor to the text by showing how mistakes can happen and how it can all fall apart. Easy for kids to start with the initial tower and then build on it.

Strongly recommend it .. it is fun .. it is different and well worth the price.

If you have ever built a card house then you might be interested in this book. The author has created some very intricate card buildings (see the Capital on the cover) but it all builds on some simple basics.

The author shows, with very clear instructions, how to start at the very beginning and then how to expand out, up, or both. There is even a section detailing the fun of knocking them down.

The instructions are complemented by entertaining, and sometimes witty, text that holds the interest without becoming too scholarly.

This young man is amazing. I booked him for an event I planned at a science center several years ago and his talent is incredible. Then, after all his meticulous work, he took a leaf blower and destoyed his creation only to let the children collect all the cards!

What I found amazing about this book is that within the first few pages, you will learn the basic technique to stack cards and start building some phenomenal structures. And, even if you are clumsy, your structures will still attract admiring comments. My daughter, who is 6, has started building and enjoys it more than lego.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing and unique book - but you need the right cards!, February 26, 2010
This review is from: Stacking the Deck : Secrets of the World's Master Card Architect (Paperback)
This book is the definitive card building guide - all the steps are very well explained with plenty of photos, and there's some great projects such as a Mayan Pyramid and the Empire State building (if you have 45 decks to hand!).

I just wanted to warn potential stackers out there about the importance of using the right cards, it is not explained clearly enough in the book. You need UNLAMINATED cards - and in the UK these are quite hard to find. Unfortunately most cards are unsuitable, their slick laminated surface makes the cards just twist out of place in your building after reaching only two or three storys high. The Pla-Mor brand Berg recommends are apparently no longer made.

Apart from that this is great, get a child (age 8+) this book and a few decks and it should keep them occupied for some time. I have found cardstacking to quite therapeutic, and it helps you develop good co-ordination and lateral thinking.

I purchased this book for my daughter. She had a school assignment to build a weight bearing structure out of playing cards. She got some good ideas by reading stacking the Deck.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Only Book About Cardstacking, August 18, 2005
This review is from: Stacking the Deck : Secrets of the World's Master Card Architect (Paperback)
This is very sad that everything that is recorded about cardstacking is merely this one book. Building Houses of Cards is more than child's play. This is a sport; just like Football, Basketball, or Tennis. I wish there was a Cardstacking Club or something like this... Here is what I hope will grow up and become the first Cardstacking Club: myspace.com/cardstacker

This book is amazing. Its simple explanation of how to build stronger and stronger card houses was easy enough for my 7 year old to understand. Mr. Berg's personal antecdotes made it interesting reading for adults as well. It kept our whole family busy for hours....even days! Tom O'Donnell's succinct reporting skills helped bring out the fascinating aspects of card building. I'm buying ten as Christmas presents!
