5.0 out of 5 stars One of the most talented bands you've never heard of America, March 12, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Stadium Blitzer (Audio CD)
Undoubtedly one of the most origingal bands out there today. If you are an Uncle Tupelo fan, you will definitely relate to their style. I've seen them twice in there hometown of Austin,TX. and they are just as good live as they are on CD. If you are looking for something new,you won't be disappointed in these guys.

4.0 out of 5 stars A fresh, vivid, jubilant celebration of American music., June 8, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Stadium Blitzer (Audio CD)
Stadium Blitzer is a fresh, vivid, jubilant celebration of Americana, by a band that is destined to become a cornerstone in the reclamation of honest, rough-hewn, emotive acoustic music. The influences here run from Bill Monroe to Townes Van Zandt to Bruce Springstein to the Minutemen. It's a very live-sounding album, evoking the spontaneous energy of a lamp-lit late night jam session. The songs are loosely stitched musical folktales, driven by the energy and chemistry of one of the tightest bands recording today. What is most impressive about Stadium Blitzer is the emotional depth it achieves, from the delicacy of a quirky ballad such as "I Like Drinkin'" to the intoxicating thrill of "Pine Island Bayou." Overall, this music is so purely fun that it's easy to get swept away.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just as good the second time around, September 8, 2006

This, the Gourds second effort, is as good as the first. You can't help but rock out to Lament and Magnolia. Cold Bed is beautiful and Pushed Her Down is classic. You will not be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Four E's: Essential, Exuberant, Eclectic, and Enjoyable, January 18, 2005
This review is from: Stadium Blitzer (Audio CD)
Yes, the vocals may catch you off guard at first until you realize how well everything from the vocals to the percussion to the guitars to all the instruments foment into a frothy aural stew that is as original as anything I've heard for the past 15 years. The Gourds are my favorite intact and performing band.

The variety of songs and styles runs the gamut from Dyin' Diamond or LGO, songs that will nearly cause you to levitate with energy to the sodden, gospel-tinged I Like Drinking. And where the hell else are you going to find anyone this side of Scotland singing about eating hagis? This CD is just chock full of great tunes, the stuff of life interpreted through the haze of smoke and drink and sitting around on porches and eating pot-luck dinners and seeing the sadness and the glory of life.

But you better check out the samples first because the Gourds are not your mainstream anything.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's pretty much my favorite CD for the last year and a half, August 7, 1999
By A Customer

I traveled 3 hours to see The Gourds in Portland,Or. after hearing "Dem's Good...". Such an incredible show I bought "Stadium Blitzer" at the show. The sound is definitely that which reminds me of what comes out of Austin, but with a unique twist to it. I love the vocals, they seem to mix with the sweetest sound I've heard in a long time (ie "Coppermine" and "Maria") The lyrics I've enjoyed learning (ie "I Like Drinking"), but I'd really like to know what a Stadium Blitzer is! I'm trying to get to Portland this fall to see them again...well worth it!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Great One, March 8, 2006
This review is from: Stadium Blitzer (Audio CD)
I loved the first cd (Dem's Good Beeble) so much that I didn't wan to tarnish these guys rep by listening to a follow up that would be weaker. But Stadium Blitzer is just as great and the band flex their playing muscles a bit more here. Opening and closing with the lonely sound of crickets chirping, this collection of songs suprises yet again. "Pine Island Bayou" is a bluegrass punk stand out. "Maria", "I Like Drinking" and "When The Money Comes Rolling In" are great moody songs/paintings in the tradition of Tom Waits. And one of my favorites "Cold Bed" is here. Kev Russel has one of the best unique voices in music today.

This finely crafted piece of art from Texas is one of the most treasured CDs in my collection. I've owned it for years now, and it still finds it's way back into my CD player time and time again. In my opinion it's the best Gourds CD out there... slightly edging out demsgoodbeeble. Truly an alt country classic... music for the well read and unwashed... do yourself a favor and pick this bad boy up.
