The sharpener I got works wonderfully. I'm trying to find another for work. It seems like the Seattle reviewer reviewed a different sharpener; because I don't see any of those problems. Mine works well, on the higher quality graphite pencils. It does chew up cheaper ones, because they are cheap! Low quality wood composites... not real wood. Definitely a good value, as far as I am concerned.

I picked up one of these at a store about a year ago and theres definitely nothing to brag about. My led breaks often when i try to sharpen them (especially color pencils) and my number one complaint is that the top is very loosely fit on the container so it easily falls off, spilling all of the pencil shavings everywhere. For as cheap as hand held sharpeners usually go for, I would definitely recommend something else.

After purchasing several pencil sharpeners for travel, I was won over by the appeal of German engineering and manufacturing. I have not been disappointed. This sharpener performs very well with colored pencils and standard lead pencils. The container affixes securely, so I don't worry about shaving at the bottom of my bag. I don't expect to buy another sharpener unless I lose this one - and then I'd buy another Staedtler.

I have used a number of these sharpeners and have been pleased with the performance of each one. This sharpener is dependable and consistently sharpens to needle sharp points. The blade is long lasting and great for artists that travel. Canister for shavings stays securely attached so no unexpected messes in your suitcase or artbin. The smaller of the two openings fits German made artist pencils, such as Faber Castell, just perfectly.

Very inexpensive sharpener. In many cases your pencils will cost more than the sharpener itself.
But it's a good sharpener to avoid. It chews up the wood of colored pencils, and never gets a sharp point. For lead pencils, the awful blade cuts to a dull, blunt point. By design, this will never sharpen pencils well. Not even worth the low price. It's a shame, because Staedtler has made some very fine products before.
