We bought one of these for work as we do quite a bit of erasing. We had an older model from this company for quite a very long time and finally the motor was wearing out and we needed to replace it. This one lasted only 3 months at most. The motor still runs, but the eraser tip has become disconnected from the motor rendering it useless. Find a different eraser than this, it's not worth the price.

I've owned one of these for 15 years plus, but finally needed to replace mine as the cord was wearing out. In that time they've changed from a metal tip to plastic, although the picture still shows metal. I recently dropped it off of the plan table, and three out of the four prongs broke off, rendering it useless.

I work for Michigan State University and purchased this eraser to erase marks from historic aerial imagery. The eraser was basically useless. The chuck that holds the eraser did not work right out of the box. We modified it by adding a rubber band so that it would hold the eraser in place. In the first day, the eraser quit working and was very temperamental. Also, the eraser sends chunks of eraser particles flying all over the workspace. Overall, the eraser is useless.

I am not sure why so many people are having problems with this erasing machine. I have used this for past two years quite extensively and have experienced no issue.

Previous to purchasing this model, I bought a used older model from Ebay. It was the one with aluminum chuck. Apparently the previous owner used it for years and only after a month or so the motor stopped spinning. So I had to buy a new one. The only apparent difference between the old and new models is the material used in the chuck and I was also a bit disappointed by this downgrading. The ring that chokes the chuck also became a bit thicker. I was afraid that this ring would rub against paper so I filed off the edge of the ring a little. I would give 5 stars if they have kept the aluminum chuck instead of plastic.

I keep my machine hanging from the ceiling with carabiner and rope. This helps the power cord stay out of the way and prevent the machine from rolling off from my table. I have never dropped my machine. I suspect a lot of problems other reviewers encountering were caused by dropping the machine. One thing I find funny is that eraser refills are too long to fit into this machine and you need to cut them in half before use. I am not sure why they don't pre-cut the refills into the right length.

I also own another small battery operated Staedtler erasing machine but I only use this corded model now even for detailed work. The benefit of this corded models over smaller battery operated ones are:

1. The big switch. Less fatigue on your fingers after long use. I use rubber band to hold the switch when I need to use it continuously.

2. Smaller battery operated models use thin metal chucks - they tend to cut into the paper and permanently damage your work.

3. The design of this eraser enables holding other thinner eraser made for small electric erasers if you make your own adapter from duct tape etc.

4. Corded one has more power. Never runs out of battery.

I am stunned to read the negative reviews about the Staedtler #527 corded electric eraser. I have owned mine for four or five years, and I couldn't possibly be more pleased. It works reliably and is perfectly silent. To me, it's very comfortable to hold and to operate.

I had to replace the chuck once (after carelessly dropping the eraser.) No problem -- they're available at a local artists' supply store, and they're not expensive. To the other reviewers who complain about breaking the chuck when the machine is dropped from table-height, I ask, what do you expect? This is an artists' instrument, not a pipe wrench. Take care of your gear, and it will serve you for a good long time. (Drop your Rapidograph from a similar height, and tell me what happens to the pen point. Same thing.)

A footnote: when I broke the chuck on mine, it was a Sunday when my artists' supply store was closed. Not knowing that they had them in stock, I e-mailed Staedtler to inquire about getting one directly from them. The next morning, I received very courteous replies from their offices in Germany and in North America. They could not have been more helpful.

If I could give this product and its manufacturer 15 stars to counter the unfounded 1-star ratings given elsewhere on this page, I would. This is an excellent product, one that I highly recommend.

Plastic chuck sucks... have had mine for just months, dropped it, need to buy a new one now... total POS, as I'd say! DON'T buy it! Waste of $65!

Going to EBay, there are some old Brunings, all metal, also newer Koh-I-Noors on bid... some are in very acceptable shape!

This eraser broke after just a couple of time using it. The tip is very thin plastic instead of metal like my old one, it snapped off when putting eraser in. Also the ereaser wouldn't stay in place the plastic ring slips down and eraser falls out while using. I would never purchase this again, it's alot of money for it to break so soon.

I have an erasing machine just like this one that is over 10 years old and still working fine--nothing like it. Ordered two more but the chuck size is different and will not hold the eraser in place. The eraser either flies out or slides back into the machine. I wrapped a rubber band around the chuck to see if this will work. I know of no other eraser still available that is plug in and as powerful as this one so I am reluctant to return. I have the rechargeable version but it doesn't hold a charge long enough--I sometimes work for several hours at a time. If the rubber bands work I will stock up and if not, I need to return.

I've had this eraser for about 2 months and yesterday the hing just fell off i have a hook on my drafting table especially for my eraser and as i was drafting i heard something fall it was the eraser. The hing just snapped but the eraser is fine.It works really good it erasers perfectly .I would recommend to others.
