I use these in a 4th and 5th grade classroom. The center wheel is absolutely essential to helping students draw a consistent circle as well as learn how to subdivide the circle in to a variety of shapes. Without the center wheel, another compass I tried would adjust slightly during the student's task and the results would turn out poorly.

I have not observed the problem with not being able to sufficiently tighten the lead and pointer pieces other reviewers have had. What does happen is the little adjusting screws and nuts will eventually work loose and if the student isn't careful, the pieces go missing.

Next year, when I use these again, I'll spend a portion of the first lesson doing nothing more than teach them how to sharpen the leads and adjust the tighteness. "Lefty Loosey, Righty Tightey" is a phrase they will fully understand by the end of that lesson. The screws and nuts will vanish if the students don't know that phrase. Sounds like a trivial lesson but a student has to learn it sometime or another.

I second what the other purchaser said.
The clamping screws will not clamp. When one tries to make a
circle with these, the lead pushes right back into the body,
changing radius and eliminating any ability to leave a mark on the
paper. Even if the lead did stay put, the screw mechanism to change
the radius and the legs themselves are extremely loose lending to
a horrible "feel" and a very difficult time setting the compass
accurately... I have to put this product in my top 3 WORST buys...

P.s. I'm being quite polite with the description of this compass!!

I just purchased a vintage VEMCO sc-110 compass off Ebay for $15
that I'm absolutely THRILLED with!!! I suggest you do the same..

The screws to hold the lead and metal point in place are round screws in a round hole rather then locking screws. As a result they can not be tightened and do not work. Essentially less then useless.

good solid compass for drawing and drafting, I find the wheel a bit free, so it has to be held in place while used, i wish i had a way to add just enough resistance to the wheel that it would stay put, but also be free enough to wind open and closed completely, apparently this is a tall order for compasses in general...
