As a long-time album-listening fan, I was suprised by my first live Peter Himmelman show - I had expected a down-beat, serious performer, and out came a hysterically funny guy with a prayer-shawl peeking out from his t-shirt. He made up songs about elephants, let all the kids in the audience come up and strum his guitar and begged us all to dance. This album lurks around the edges of how totally FINE a live performer Himmelman is. The favorites, such as "Raina" and "Impermanent Things" are performed with compelling intensity, followed by brilliant improvisational madness, inspired by random audience remarks. This album showcases his ability to use the talents of audience members to flesh out his one-man sound. Himmelman never loses the thread of his performance, and never loses his hold on his listeners.
