The list author says: "I'm writing a presentation on the screen to stage adapation, a popular Broadway trend of the past decade or so. These consist (mostly) of films made from original screenplays (not adaptations of books or plays) adapted for the stage and given musical numbers to support the storyline. I don't include Disney musicals on this last as most were based on Fairy Tales or folklore, not an original screenplay, these include Mary Poppins, The Lion King, Tarzan, The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast. Am I missing any that have been actually on stage?"
"Yes it's a movie....however, it was first a musical off broadway, I actually think it originated in Los Angeles on stage (soundtrack on this list). Based on 1936 anti-marijuana propaganda film of the same name which became a campy cult favorite in the 1970s."
"Stage adaptation of 1982 film starring Julie Andrews, directed by Blake Edwards. Like Thoroughly Modern Millie, the original film was a movie musical, however additional numbers were added for the stage."
"One of the earliest of these screen to stage musical adaptations. More of a "based on" than an adaptation though. Musical biography of Guido, a semi-autobiographical character of Federico Fellini's 1963 film 8 1/2."
"Does it count??? I think I will allow it! The documentary for which this musical was based on the Beale women, though true to life, the Beales are presented as characters and the story plays out like that of an original screenplay, so crazy you thought someone had to be making it up. So, I say this counts on my list."
