I have always wanted something like this that had a retractable cord. When I received this though, I was disappointed for the following reasons:

- it is really heavy, I suppose for 'durability', but mine arrived with many rattles and obviously many small broken hard plastic pieces inside. UPDATE: I confirmed the many broken pieces inside after taking it apart.

- The cord retractability is very touchy - it will try to retract if you just breath a little too hard 10 feet away from it.... maybe mine is broken and doesn't work right. UPDATE: mine was broken (which I verified after taking it apart), and those rattles I heard were small plastic pieces from the inside. I doubt it was broken during shipment, so it appears that mine was sent out broken from the factory.

- for "26 feet", it sure seems short. Maybe once I take it apart and unwind everything it will stretch out a little more.

UPDATE: I did take it apart hoping to harvest out the cable so at least I could use that. But it turns out that the cable is not contiguous. The outside cable is connected to the inside one via a couple metal contact strips. I'd imagine these would have some serious sound quality issues, especially over time as the contacts wear from each time you retract the cable. Changed review to 1-star.

I ordered the exact same cable that dhinmn did, and I have no complaints. Perhaps he/she didn't read the product info that came with it?

I never really thought about needing a retractable instrument cable, but now that I have it, I'd never go on the road without it. Just a couple of notes about dhinmn's review, first. The "big ball near the plug end" that "looks really goofy next to your instrument" isn't really intended to go near your instrument. It's a brake for the retraction. Pull out the cable to the length that you need, then slide the ball down to the base unit to stop the retraction. Of course, that's all covered on the product info card that came with the cable, but even without that, I'm pretty sure I could have figured that out on my own. UPDATE:(After seeing my review, it appears that dhinmn took out the comments about the "big ball near the plug end.")

A couple of notes about the sound quality: I have no complaints about it, really; and that's all that matters. The connectors are tight. The cable is thick and you can tell it's high-quality. I'm not a sound engineer, so I have no desire to take this apart and see how it works. It just works. It's portable, and I can already tell this will take years of beatings on the road. I'm very impressed.
