Book Description

December 1, 2004
Make beautiful stained glass quilts the simple way...by fusing! Step-by-step photos accompany the easy-to-follow instructions. All the gorgeous patterns are presented full sized. Pattern pieces are colored the same as the quilts to aid in fabric selection and placement. Learn how to applique the pieces, finish the raw edges, and quilt the layers, all at the same time. This is a real time-saver, and it looks great. The beautiful stained-glass patterns are the result of a collaboration between popular quilting teacher and author Brenda Brayfield and well-known stained-glass artist turned quilter Lise Merchant. The result is a delightful collection of patterns that range from simple to sophisticated.

Editorial Reviews

Review

By outlining shapes in black, this Stained Glass technique is an effective way of rendering bold, stylized pictures in bright colors. Offering a short cut on the traditional technique which uses bias tape as the 'leading', in this version the shapes are first fused. The leading then cut from a single piece of black fabric and subsequently appliqued and quilted in one operation. This is a bright and colorful book with clear step-by-step diagrams and instructions. -British Patchwork & Quilting

About the Author

"Log Cabin: Rediscovered by Machine" is Brenda's first book about quiltmaking. She has been making and showing quilts since she took her first class in 1993 and teaches quilting in local workshops. Brenda Brayfield was born in Northern Ireland and immigrated with her parents to Vancouver, British Columbia as a young child. She now lives in Surrey with her husband, Roger.

Lise Merchant was born in the province of Quebec, Canada, and moved to the Yukon in 1981. An accomplished stained glass artist, Lise has many large commissioned works in government buildings, churches and private collections throughout Canada, the United States, and Europe. The idea of blending her earlier love of sewing with her stained glass designs took shape when she mentioned the idea to a friend and quilt shop owner. She discovered that the two passions blend and complement each other.

3.0 out of 5 stars Assumes you're a quilter, October 18, 2007

This book contains instructions on how to created a stained glass quilt by cutting the lead-look fabric in one piece, then fusing the colored "glass" pieces to the back of it. You do sew the layers together after piecing, but the majority of the work is either glue or fusible web. As mentioned in the previous review, the quilts are small: the largest quilt measurement is 26 1/2 inches (and it's comprised of 4 repeats of a 7 inch square block with a border).

However, the author uses quilting terminology. It's recommended that you "true" the fabric before cutting, without actually telling you what this means (it means you need to make sure the folded fabric is absolutely straight by pulling out some of the crosswise threads to establish the original grainline). You're also told to bind the quilt, "using your favorite technique." If you haven't done quilt binding before, this is not exactly helpful.

I do like the majority of the patterns [they're mostly scenic or floral in design (mountains and sunflowers) but there's also a fish pattern, a bird pattern and a rooster pattern]. If you're looking for an abstract "stained glass window" pattern (diamonds or geometrics), it's not in here, but the patterns are nice, and it's a decent book if you know the ins and outs of quilting. For someone who has never sewn before, I imagine it would be somewhat baffling in areas.

3.0 out of 5 stars Faux Stained Glass, December 7, 2008

This book is for those who prefer to create a lead applique rather than use bias tape. If that is your preference, or think it might be, the instructions are good and the patterns pretty basic. Pieces are small and not terribly complicated so could be good for a beginner in this technique. A couple of the patterns are of interest but for the most part they are not special.

I wasn't thrilled with this book. It shows how to do stained glass using black background not using the bias method. It is a nice book just not what I had expected...
