Stainer's Crucifixion,
By reinhart reiss (chester, va United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Stainer: The Crucifixion (Audio CD)
John Stainer's THE CRUCIFIXION is another of those pieces when, once sung or heard, had to become a part of my collection of choral CD's. I purchased this CD after reviewing the sound bytes from several CD's. My opinion: ABSOLUTELY Deserving of the 5 stars I've given it.There are several outstanding characteristics of this recording. First, the lyrics (in English) are very clear. The accompanying booklet has the words for quick reference, if needed. Then, there's the organist who understands that the organ is an ACCOMPANYING instrument and not the ONLY source of music for the piece. Margaret Phillips plays the organ so wonderfully that it does not hide the chorus in any part, yet jumps to life at appropriate times. Thank you, Ms. Phillips!! The soloists in THE CRUCIFIXION are fantastic, as well. Clarity and feeling are the rules of order with their singing. Thank you, Mr's. Hill and George! The combination of words, music, and clarity make this one of my top-rated CD's. (Others in this category are THE SEVEN LAST WORDS OF CHRIST by the Choir of First United Methodist Church [Gothic G49124] and Rossini's PETITE MESSE SOLENNELLE by the London Chamber Choir [Decca 289444842-2].

I really enjoyed this CD. Our choir sang this piece by Steiner years ago, and it brought back many memories plus the work itself is powerful.

God so loved the world... indeed,

This review is from: Stainer: The Crucifixion (Audio CD)
At first, I didn't know what to expect since I've never heard Stainer's Crucifixion before. But now after I've listened to it, I can't turn it off. This piece of music is absolutely beautiful and the recording is gorgeously sung by everyone. It's too bad it's not that popular. My personal favourites have to be "The Agony" and "God so loved the world"... maybe because I'm singing the Crucifixion and a baritone. Still having a hard time believing that this recording is SO well done. Strongly recommend it!
