The Zebra F301 Pen is the best pen for Soldiers in the Army. It is durable, reliable, and fits perfectly in the pen pocket on ACU's( Army Combat Uniforms, for those non military people). The ink flows smoothly from the pens leaving clear lines. They also stand up well in the desert environment ( I am currently on my second tour in Iraq and have used nothing but these pens for both tours). There wouldn't be a need to buy a 12 pack of pens other than everyone I work with is always trying to get me to give them a pen, so I am generous and allow them the joy of using a great pen for Soldiers.

This is an exceptional pen, and if it wasn't for the fact that I've found an even better one, I'd give it 5 stars. This biggest thing for me is that like other folks here, I'm in the military and there are very few good retractable pens out there that will slide in and out of our pen pockets. This pen has a little bit of rubber on it so it doesn't slide in and out as smoothly as I'd like, but I will honestly say that it's not terrible at it either. The reason why it does slide out of the pocket so well with the rubber on it is because the circumference of the shaft is smaller than a standard sized pen.

Now let me introduce you to the pen that I have fallen in love with, the Pilot Better Ballpoint Pen.

Here are a few differences which I feel enable the Pilot to edge out the Zebra as being a superior pen:

1. It's plastic (with steel highlights) so it's easier to hold onto and doesn't slip around in the hands. The stainless steel shaft on the Zebra with sweaty hands can get cumbersome, even with the grip on it.
2. The Pilot weighs a great deal less so you forget that you're carrying it. When I'm uniform with a Zebra pen, I notice it and feel it there. (FYI, this never bothered me until I started carrying the lightweight Pilot pen. Now, if I carry a Zebra pen, it's REALLY noticeable, and not in a good way.)
3. Because the Pilot is plastic and has no rubber on it, it slides effortlessly out of the pen pocket.
4. The steel clip is far superior on the Pilot. It will not move at all when clipped to something. The Zebra can slide a little and swivel in place.

Zebra 301 Pens are the best quality, low-cost writing instruments available. As a student and as a clinician and writer, I have sought out a comfortable, affordable, quality pen. I have found such a pen in the Zebra 301 series.

It has a smooth stainless steel barrel with a rubber grip near the tip for comfort. It has a pocket clip and has a clickable plunger to expose the writing tip. This is superior to twist pens which tend to untwist causing the writing tip to disappear. The pens come in three colors, red, black, and blue. All also come in fine and medium widths.

If you want a quality affordable writing pen, this is the one to buy. You can buy more costly pens (Cross pens, etc.), but the quality will not be signisficantly greater than these Zebra pens. Buy them in bulk for economy. You will want to own more than one, for anyone who uses this pen will tend to slip it in their pocket. So buy a bunch of them and then if you "lose" several to friends, you will have many back-ups. The pens come with affordable ink barrel inserts as well.

This is a terrific pen, cheap, and available at most Wal-Mart and office stores.

As a pen geek, I love finding the perfect cheap ballpoint pen. What drew me to this Zebra pen was that it didn't have the cheap plastic look of so many other pens in the price range.

In writing, the pen passed with flying colors, making a nice line on the page, seldom sticking, and with a decent weight for a cheap pen. It moved to the top of my list in the pen rotation.

Sadly, it wasn't to last. I toss each pen into my pants pocket when I go to work. It's obviously not the best place, but some days I don't have a shirt pocket for it to go into and I hate losing pens or leaving them at home. One day I pulled the pen out of my pocket and found that the plastic grip had broken where it connects to the stainless steel portion of the pen. Over time, each of my Zebra pens had the same malfunction.

If you keep the pen in planner or shirt pocket, then the pen should hold up well. If your pens take a lot of abuse, I'd recommend Zebra's Ballpoint Pen, Retractable, Stainless Steel, .7mm, Black (ZEB29411) Category: Ballpoint Retractable Pens instead.

Everyone needs a pen, whether it is for causal doodling, outlining a review, penning down a draft for the next Tolkienesque novel, or just writing down a phone number. There is a lot of choice in pens now, and they differ in the quality and type of their ink, the construction and aesthetics of the pen, and the price and availability of the pen. It can be a little hard and scary to navigate the extraordinary variety in pens, so most settle for the pens given out at expo booths or whatever is cheapest at Walmart that day. For the pen enthusiast, however, pens are serious business because a good pen can help you feel comfortable and inspired while a bad pen can have you constantly focusing on issues with the pen and destroy your productivity. Your tools have a much larger impact than you may have previously thought.

The Zebra-F301 is a great, somewhat cheap ballpoint pen with very nice aesthetic qualities and a great price, but the ink could be a little better in comparison with other well-known pens like the Pilot-G2.

The pen is made of a shiny, steel barrel that not only looks classy and sophisticated, but also prevents the pen from most scratches, smudges, and forces that could break the pen. The barrel is well designed and the pen fits neatly into the hand without being too small or too bulky. Many other pens of the same price suffer from cheap plastic cases that are either too small for your hand and leave you with hand cramps or just too bulky and annoying to carry around. The pen is also very light despite its metal frame and one can easily write with it for a few hours. The pen's size and design also fits well into even the tightest, most uncompromising of pockets and the metal barrel means it will not come out bent or broken from an active lifestyle or rough use.
