This microwave quit working after about a year and a half. It no longer heats anything. It also looks terrible because the plastic where the buttons are is peeling off. I could deal with the appearance of the microwave but obviously I can't deal with it not heating food. I wouldn't recommend this product to anyone.

I had a GE stainless steel microwave with a round knob for setting the time and an industrial looking door handle that was far better than the push botton types. It was used and abused and finally caught fire due to a misread of the timer setting after having to adjust the power level. That and not having a replacement turntable were its flaws, but I would have bought another if still available.

I decided to get an over the range microwave this time to replace the GE, but since I have an older 36" wide vent hood, it is a bigger deal than getting the now common 30" models. Since I use the microwave constantly, I decided to find a cheap model with the best value I could find locally to get me through the days or weeks until the over the range model is installed. This narrowed the lineup down considerably. I found this model at Wal-Mart online and pickup at the store was available.

I liked the larger 1.1 Cubic foot size, the large door handle, the 1000 watts, the inside light, and it only has one quirky feature that is easy to get used to. That is the number pad 1 to 6 adds minutes to the time , then starts, and the start button adds 30 seconds unless you push the Time Cook button first and then enter the time and start.

Even with the unique timer, the microwave seems to be a great value and would give it four and half stars, but giving five since I think it was unfairly reviewed previously. Wal-Mart had some fair reviews, and that convinced me to try it along with no shipping charge, just sales tax.

I bought this at WalMart yesterday bec. my existing Emerson microwave (MW8115SS, which I loved, but is not being sold any longer) stopped working after almost 10 years and several moves in my car. I wish Emerson still sold this model or at least had a replacement model that was very similar, as this MW1161SB is not as good.
1. When it is running, the microwave is very loud and annoying, almost sounding like there is something wrong with it, but no, it's just loud. Very bad and big flaw in design.
2. The inside of the machine is too small.
3. Buttons on front panel are too small and hard to see and have to be pushed harder than should be necessary.
4. The beep when the cooking cycle stops is VERY loud, almost hurts your ears.

Check out the many poor reviews for this microwave at

I should have looked at these reviews first, but I was desperate to get a microwave since I use one so often. I will be returning this one. I don't know what one I will be getting. Any suggestions?

This product is junk. Barely had it maybe a yr and it started messing up about a month or 2 ago. It's crazy....wouldn't defrost and then it would defrost but would take forever to get it done. Sometimes it heats up food but usually it won't. I have been noticing a metal burning smell that recently has gotten stronger and after looking up reviews I saw that a ton of people have complained about this model actually catching fire! WHAT JUNK and they should have been recalled!!!!!! Now I have to throw it completely away even though it looks perfectly fine.....what good is a microwave that won't heat food up??? More money and time wasted. Will NEVER buy a Emerson microwave again. Their stuff is obviously complete junk.

I have had this model for 2 years and I really like it. I initially selected it because it was the size and wattage I wanted plus was stainless steel. I disagree with all the negative comments. Mine works and looks like new. I think at least one reviewer is talking about the wrong model because this one doesn't have a grill. I'm ordering another now because a power surge took mine out!!

Awful awful! I bought this after seeing it in person at Target. I was really surprised how loud it was, first off - both while heating food and also the beep. Then it literally stopped heating food after ONE WEEK of use! WHAT? Even when it worked it was pretty poor. My old microwave was 900W and actually heated food MUCH more effectively than this piece of junk did...Definitely will be returning it.

I just got this microwave secondhand for not a whole lot cheaper than brand new. The buttons are already bubbling up, and seem like they will be peeling in no time. The original owners said they had it 4 months, and it was manufactured only a year ago. I haven't even used it yet, but I'm disappointed in the buttons already.
