5.0 out of 5 stars A new refresh to an old classic design, September 8, 2009
By
This review is from: Men's Stainless Steel, Pulsar World TimerTM Watch (Watch)
The Pulsar PBL047 is an updated version of Pulsar's classic Spoon design. The element inside the watch is the exact element used in the old Pulsar Spoon Michi Tabi (World Traveler) watch marketed in the late 1990s and early 2000s. The element has been installed in an updated watch housing with a new band style. It's quite attractive and built like a tank!

The dot matrix element contains numerous features, including a stop watch, alarm, and world time feature that enables the user to select from a variety of preprogrammed, worldwide time zones. If you travel for business or pleasure, then this may be the ideal watch for you. My wife is from China and I can switch from New York time to Beijing time with the press of only a few buttons. The watch also sports a very thick glass-type crystal and a Light button to illuminate the display in low-light conditions.

There are a few things a buyer should know about this watch. First, it is somewhat large and a little heavy. I like this because I enjoy a watch that looks and feels "manly" in construction.

The watch element does not illuminate brightly. This style element never has. It retains its battery power through gentle illumination. In mid- to low-light settings, you'll need to press the Light button to illuminate the display.

The watch band does not offer "in between" size settings. I found this to be a problem. If I remove one band segment, it hugs my wrist uncomfortably. If I put the segment back in, the watch flops all over. There is no fine-tuned solution with this band. Either I seek a replacement band, gain weight, or learn to live with it; I've opted for the latter. Also, hire a jeweler to resize the band. Without jeweler's tools, it's too difficult for the lay person.

I used to own the Michi Tabi, which lasted about four and a half years of continuous wearing. Problems started to occur with the buttons on the watch not working. My Seiko retailer told me this is a common problem; the buttons are usually the first things to wear out. I'm hoping Pulsar has addressed this problem with the latest incarnation of the watch.

Another word of caution based on personal experience. The battery in my old watch lasted about 1-1/2 years. Pulsar states two or more years between battery changes, but this certainly wasn't my experience. After three or so battery changes, I've learned you can expect about 1-1/2 years from the battery with this particular watch element.

Also--and this is VERY important--if you purchase this watch, when you have the battery changed, be sure to tell your jeweler that there is a tiny spring that sits in the watch element that grounds out to the inside-back cover of the watch. This spring enables the watch to make sound. If your jeweler loses this spring, the watch will no longer make noise (no alarm, beeps, etc.).

My final assessment is, after being without my old watch for the last five years, I was ecstatic when my wife purchased me this one. I think it's an even better update to the old stalwart Spoon watch line. Wearing it again is like being reacquainted with an old friend. It's attractive, sturdy, and an eye catcher. Don't be surprised if people look at it and ask where you got it, what kind of watch it is, etc. While Seiko and Pulsar are mass-produced mainstays in the watch industry, this particular model is rare. I've never seen anyone wearing it or the old Michi Tabi I used to own. It'll leave you looking forward to checking the time...

BTW: What time is it anyway? Let me check... My trusty friend reports it's 2:32pm.
