This is a great product, but it has one weakness: the pestle (the part you hold in your hand) is too light. (It's made of hollow stainless steel.) A heavy pestle makes things easier to crush because the weight helps do the grinding for you - this is why these are traditionally made of heavy stone. If you're crushing pills (which are easy to crush), this product will work well. If you need to crush some spices (e.g. cumin seeds), you'll have to put in more work than you'd expect. If I were designing this product I would have weighted the pestle - you don't realize how light it is until you pick it up and start using it. So just be aware of this limitation.

I purchased this mortar and pestle to grind hot peppers, intending to dedicate it for that purpose, because my wife objected to my putting peppers her electric spice grinder (which is not easy to clean thoroughly, by the way.) However, the highly polished surface of this m/p set makes it easy to clean, with little chance for contamination, so I intend to use it any time I need to crush coarse spices. Of course, if you leave it on the kitchen counter, guests may ask if you're a pharmacist! Stainless-LUX is clearly very commited to customer satisfaction (look at their feedback,) and was very responsive to a problem in shipping. I only wish that approximate volumes (and dimensions in inches) were included with the description of their gorgeous products. [EDIT - The manufacturer followed up on my suggestion and added volume to the description.]

My dog needs daily meds that she won't take unless they're pulverized into a powder that's mixed into food. She is picky enough that she will separate, and spit out, chunks of pills while chewing and swallowing the peanut chunks in chunky peanut butter! I previously used an inexpensive stone mortar and pestle, but the interior of the mortar was rough-textured, and as a consequence, the powder from the crushed meds tended to stick and build up on it. That hasn't been a problem with this stainless steel mortar.

I respectfully differ with the reviewer who found this pestle to be too lightweight. If anything, it's slightly over-sized compared to the mortar, but it feels solid and well-crafted to me, with the long handle giving an excellent grip and leverage. I suppose it could have been designed with a heavier core, but materials denser than stainless steel -- lead? mercury? -- tend not to be safe around foods. It's not intended to be a bludgeon -- the crushing mechanism of a mortar and pestle shouldn't be from pure mass, but from rocking and leveraging the rounded tip of the pestle anyway. This is a matter of subjective opinion, and de gustibus non est disputandum, as the Romans used to say when arguing about mortars and pestles; but I for one found this product to be well-designed and well-manufactured.

Used for crushing medicine, dog treats, food, etc. The rubber base makes this device practical as it softens the blow on counter tops. The stainless does no absorb any residue nor transfer tastes. Excellent.

I must say that it's hard to get excited about something to grind up pills for my dogs, but having had a ceramic mortar and pestle (and having dropped the mortar and had it shatter into a million pieces), I really love this stainless steel one. The rubber bottom is icing on the cake. No more moving around the counter -- and even if it does, at least if it drops, it won't break. For $20, this will last forever. I'm very pleased with this purchase, and if you need one, you can't go wrong with this one.

I make a fresh vinaigrette with garlic & mustard almost every day. I prefer to mash the garlic & salt together in a mortar & pestle, then switch to a whisk to finish the dressing right in the mortar. I did it for years in my old pottery set but it finally broke. This stainless set is perfectly functional & is a pretty good size for the small amount I make. I wish it were just a tad narrower & deeper. The rubber ring on the base keeps it from traveling during grinding or whisking but I wish it were something permanent. Water gets into the ring during washing so it has to be removed & replaced every time.

Although I love the look of a marble mortar and pestle, I wanted something non-porous that I could use for medicinals AND food items. When I saw this I knew it was what I needed. It is small, so it's easy to store and yet it's gorgeous enough to sit out to be admired. I'm going to enjoy this for a long time!

Got this as a gift and I have to say I'm not impressed. As a fan of mortar and pestles, this set does not earn a place in my collection.

First - I noted the very metallic smell of iron is present in these pieces - not a good sign.

Second - I tried the magnet test and was not surprised at all to have the magnet firmly stick to the mortar. It adhered weakly to the pestle, making me believe that at least part of it was made out of minimal quality stainless steel. The mortar however is not and I suspect it will rust anytime it is not hand dried immediately.

Third - Anything ground up in this set takes on the same heavy metal scent I noted earlier - iron. I suppose a supplement of iron in anything you grind up may be suitable for some, but I get plenty in my diet, I do not need a mortar and pestle set enhancing it.

Overall, *highly* disappointed with this and if I could figure out a way to send it back without my friends knowing - I would.
