I was interested in this novel because it is the basis for the Hollywood movie "The Spiral Staircase." I read White's "The Wheel Turns" also because I have enjoyed Hitchcock's "The Lady Vanishes" so much. I haven't yet seen "The Spiral Staircase," but I know that the young lady protagonist is a deaf mute in the film, and a normal, un-handicapped young woman in the novel.

The premise is one I enjoy. The young woman is hired to care for a dying matriarch, and do whatever else is needed to help maintain the large mansion and the extended family it houses. From the beginning there is a sense of menace as reports come through of a serial killer closing in on the property - and he kills only young women! On a dark and stormy night (no kidding!) when the killer has just struck on the grounds of the estate, the men of the house begin to leave or disappear, one by one. The "protectors" out of the way, the women begin to disappear or become incapacitated, leaving our heroine virtually alone to protect herself and the matriarch. The old woman herself is very strange, and possibly dangerous, and there is also the sense that the killer is actually inside the house somewhere. This plays out at a steady pace in a masterful way, with the tension steadily building to a surprise climax at the very end.

I removed one star because the copy I downloaded on my Kindle (March 2015) obviously had not been proofread, not even casually. Every page, without exception, is littered with accidents of spelling, punctuation and formatting. After the first few pages, I found that I was able to block out the problems and still enjoy the story. The most difficult part for me was disentangling who said what.
