Book Description

October 1999
First published in the early 1980s to great acclaim, Stairs is now available to a new generation of readers. This unique interactive book surpasses all language barriers, enriching the traditional pop-up book format with fresh, timeless imagery. Its emphasis on visual detail -- and its absence of text -- makes it a source of simple pleasure and serenity.

With 10 pop-up stairs, each with its own uniquely complex construction, Stairs is more than entertainment -- it is an intricately designed, compelling object. In an age in which a premium is placed on information delivered quickly and electronically, this carefully crafted book, with its specially selected paper and high production values, represents a welcome antidote.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not for everyone, July 11, 2000
This review is from: Stairs (Hardcover)
This book is beautiful, spare and elegant. It features perfectly rendered variations on stairs which pop-up in the book. One is almost tempted to find Escher-like meaning in this book. It is a must-have for any true pop-up book collector! It is not for everyone, however, as it is really a work of art, rather than a simple enternainment.

3.0 out of 5 stars Underwhelmed, March 1, 2001
This review is from: Stairs (Hardcover)
STAIRS is like a one-joke show. You open ten spreads of whitish paper out of which pop up stair configurations that are especially neat when side-light is allowed to emphasize the shadow pattern. Elaborately bound and boxed, it seems more like a promotional gimmick for Jansma's archtecural firm than a true pop-up book. Compared to a fascinating pop-up like Carter and Diaz's THE ELEMENTS OF POP-UP, or the work of Robert Sabuda, the pop-up collector may find STAIRS a little - well - pale.
