From the Back Cover

Lucy Kincaid returns--as a killer's obsession.

IN THE GAME OF CRIME

A new trainee at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Lucy Kincaid has already seen more than her share of murder and mayhem. Still reeling from the sex-crime case that sealed her reputation, she's found a true friend and mentor in Agent Tony Presidio. No matter what goes down at the Bureau, Tony's got her back--until he's called to New York to help investigate the murder of a reporter with ties to Lucy.

NEVER PLAY THE VICTIM

But the reporter may not be the first victim of a patient killer with a penchant for revenge, and she's definitely not the last. Connections between closed cases, a missing person, and Tony himself lead Lucy to fear for those she cares for most. When the FBI is rocked by the death of one of their own, Lucy seeks the help of her boyfriend, private investigator Sean Rogan, to help put together the puzzle--and puts her career in jeopardy. But the harder she pushes for answers, the clearer the truth becomes: There's a killer inside Quantico. Watching her every move. Waiting to kill again…

Dear Reader:

Like most writers, I am an avid reader. I started light - Encyclopedia Brown, Trixie Belden, Nancy Drew - but by the time I was eleven, I'd discovered my mom's vast Agatha Christie and Ed McBain collections.

But two things happened on my way to becoming a mystery writer.

First, I discovered Stephen King.

As a thirteen-year-old book fanatic, I learned about page-turners early. I wrote Stephen King a fan letter after reading THE STAND and told him I wanted to be a writer when I grew up. He wrote back and told me: "If you want to be a writer, write." Which I took to mean, why wait until I grew up?

My problem? I never finished anything I started. As soon as I was well into the story and had figured out what was going to happen, I became bored and started a new project.

In high school, I became fascinated with true crime, and it wasn't until college that I started reading my mom's romance novels. They hadn't appealed to me as a teenager, but as a "mature" twenty-one year old, I found them entertaining.

Nora Roberts, Linda Howard, and others introduced me to contemporary novels that didn't involve murder, dismemberment, or deranged clowns living in the sewer.

Over the next decade, I built a career, married, had five kids, but never stopped reading--or writing.

I soon discovered a wonderful blend of suspense and romance with the romantic suspense novels of Tami Hoag, Kay Hooper and Lisa Gardner, and knew exactly what I wanted to write. I could take my mystery reader background, my fascination with true crime, and my desire for a happily ever after, and blend it into a romantic thriller.

I love romance because I want a happy ending. True love should win over adversity, if the hero and heroine are worthy. They need to earn it, because nothing achieved easily is truly appreciated. But I also love intense thrills and chills because they are physical--fear causes the entire body to react, heart pounding, head thumping, hands shaking.

DEAD HEAT, a Lucy Kincaid Thriller, is available now. Coming in July is the next Moreno & Hart Mystery, HIT AND RUN, co-written with Laura Griffin. Spring 2015 will have COMPULSION, the second book in the Max Revere series.

Thank you to all my readers. I appreciate your feedback and enthusiasm.

Writers Kathy Reichs and Steve Berry could take a note from Allison Brennan's pages: How to keep a series going without it becoming stupid and boring.

In the latest Lucy Kincaid adventure, we find Lucy at the beginning of her training at Quantico. If you've been reading the series, you will know that Lucy's first FBI application was denied, but she was admitted on her second one. Lucy's enjoying her time with her training class, but she knows that she is being watched because of her past (kidnapped, then being broadcast on the internet while she was being raped.) One of her instructors clearly doesn't like her, for reasons known to Lucy's sister-in-law Kate. Aside from that, a reporter is murdered. She had ties to a case on which Lucy worked and now Lucy is being asked to assist the police and FBI with the investigation.

Again, the story has not grown stale. Lucy is still a fascinating character, along with her boyfriend, Sean Rogan. Other characters from past novels show up, too - Lucy's brother, Patrick, Hans Vigo, and Tony Presidio. What I love, though, is that if you haven't read the other novels, you can still follow the storyline.

Highly recommend.

Tragedy strikes the McMahon family. Twelve-year-old Rachel is kidnapped from her bedroom, raped and killed. But the tragedy is compounded when her parents lie to police - they were hosting a swingers party. The case is sensationalized in a 'true-crime' bestseller and the family disintegrates.

Years later the author of the book and others associated with the crime are being methodically killed.

Lucy Kincaid is in training at Quantico and boyfriend Seth Rogan is doing all he can to support her quest to be an FBI agent. The murdered author brings involvement from the FBI and Lucy gets pulled into the investigation. Seth involves himself as he tries to keep Lucy safe and find the younger brother of the original murder victim.

Brennan raises her game in this latest Kinkaid/Rogan installment. The story is compelling, the writing is straightforward and very good. There are clues for the reader but the story development is not obvious or easy.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

I haven't finished the book yet but I am finding it to be a great read. I have read all of the books about the Kincaid family and enjoyed them all. The ones focusing on Lucy are my favorites. The books all have a great combination of romance and suspense and I enjoy the steady development of Lucy's relationship with Sean. I also enjoy keeping up with some of the characters from the earlier books...it's looking like the next book may be about Lucy's brother Patrick.

Brennan examines the nature of grief in a case that reaches from Virginia's Quantico FBI training headquarters to New York City, where a true-crime writer is found murdered in a stadium parking lot. As the case unfolds, replete with FBI agents, NYC detectives and the resources of both agencies, agent-in-training Lucy Kincaid is drawn into a multi-pronged investigation. Meanwhile, Lucy's own career is threatened by the very history that inspired her to join the agency: the tragic loss of a nephew to violence and her own traumatic experience at the hands of an unbalanced man. Struggling to be part of her class, Kincaid is haunted by her experiences, but determined to succeed- in spite of the formidable obstacles imposed by a superior; likewise, she wholeheartedly participates in the NY investigation, adding vital insights as a determined killer draws a bead on both agencies.

Written in the style of a police procedural, Brennan focuses on the psychology of grief and the consequences of childhood trauma, the long-simmering reactions of family members damaged by violence to their loved ones and the cumulative effect of misdirected rage. Balancing events at Quantico with a murder case that reaches into the pasts of more than one individual, the author constructs a psychological thriller peopled with unlikely suspects, Kincaid in the eye of the storm, emotionally supported by her PI boyfriend, Sean Rogan. While well-written and consistently interesting, Stalked is not a page-turner, but authentic in its portrayal of FBI agents and law enforcement personnel as both professional and profoundly human. I loved this book! -- This is not a synopsis-- see book description above for that.

Allison Brennan is one of the best mystery-suspense-thriller authors writing today! I have been a big fan of her books since I read my first, THE PREY. I have read all of them (in order :) just because I have to*) and STALKED ranks among my favorites.

STALKED grabs the reader from the start and keeps you on the "edge of your seat" --chapter after chapter. I didn't want to put it down which earned me some frowns from my family over the recent holiday.

She is a master storyteller, weaving in just enough back story to give the book depth and the reader enough knowledge. The mystery is compelling and complex; with gritty and genuine characters. She's not afraid to kill-off likable characters for the sake of the story. (It happened in KILLING FEAR. I still remember my shock and indignation on behalf of a certain character. I am sure I wrote to Allison, "how could you?")

STALKED continues Lucy Kincaid's story--Lucy is now (finally) a new trainee at the FBI Academy in Quantico. She has grown so much as a character from a teenage victim to a smart, intuitive and brave young woman. Her relationship with Sean Rogan deepens. I believe this is the 5th Lucy and Sean story. My only criticism of this book is I wish there was more romance--okay, sex, in it. Like the "proverbial carrot" Lucy and Sean's relationship is dangled in front of the reader. :)

Favorite characters return in this book, FBI profiler Hans Vigo (goes all the way back to THE PREY), FBI agents Noah Armstrong and Suzanne Madeaux, Assistant Director Rick Stockton, sister-in-law, Kate Donovan, brothers Dillon and Patrick Kincaid and of course Sean Rogan.
