June 1995
Straight from the Winner's Circle, the greatest jockey of all time draws on his vast experience on and off the track to spin one of the most suspenseful mysteries of the year....

Coley Killebrew was one of the best jockeys in the business -- until a race-fixing scandal got him barred from the track. Now the man responsible for blackening his name, racing steward Raymond Starbuck, offers Coley a chance to redeem his reputation. All Coley has to do is investigate some underworld characters who are muscling in on a track in New Orleans, resist the irresistible redhead he loved and lost. Francie Dorn, and reckon with Lea, Starbuck's leggy blonde daughter, who's its adept at seducing men as she is at blowing them away....

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Former jockey Shoemaker's debut is an assured and entertaining thriller about a professional horseracing syndicate plagued by corruption.

From Booklist

From the clunky steel horseshoe on the cover, which bears scant resemblance to a racing plate, through the suggestion that Saratoga races in the winter, there are numerous signs here suggesting that first-time author Shoemaker, the world's winningest jockey, didn't have complete artistic control over this racetrack mystery. Regardless, it's a first-class thriller. Banned rider Coley Killebrew is enlisted by the man who ruined his career to help stop an underworld takeover of one of the nation's great tracks. The assignment takes him to Louisiana's Magnolia Park, where he insinuates himself into a milieu of fast horses, even faster women, and a dangerous array of unsavory characters presided over by corrupt aristocrat Remy Courville. The pace quickens as the murders mount, culminating in a cataclysmic finish played out in the midst of suitably horrific hurricane. For sheer excitement, Shoemaker's initial foray into fiction ranks very near the top of a crowded genre. Dennis Dodge --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars a great mystery!!, March 26, 1999

I had been looking for a good mystery and I found it. This book was very well written and it centers around horse racing much better than Dick Francis' books do. I love racing and mysteries. Shoemaker knows exactly what he's taking about and makes you feel like you're really there. Overall I loved it.
