Book Description

February 1, 2009
Sterling McCallum gave the plain, hard warning to Jessica Larson. The brooding rogue cop had a stone in place of a heart and a past as mysterious as the case that brought them together. But this time Jessica couldn't back off. Something compelled her to stand her ground and brave the emotions this man had long aroused. Suddenly, their darkest secrets, their deepest desires, shimmered to the surface... about to explode.

3.0 out of 5 stars Just OK -- I'll confess I don't read many romances, so maybe that was the problem., August 9, 2009

This review is from: Rogue Stallion (Montana Mavericks, Return to Big Sky Country, Book No.1) (Mass Market Paperback)
But I've read some pretty good romances, and this just wasn't one of them. The plotting wasn't bad but the writing was not very good. If you like some fairly explicit sex in your romance novel, it's here, although they never get to "it" in the course of the book -- apparently they both believe in waiting until marriage.

The plot involves two people who have been wounded and are therefore inhibited and distrusting of the opposite sex. One is a social worker and the other is a deputy sheriff, in a small Montana town which is probably meant to be Whitefish (near Glacier Park) but is called Whitehorn. It's a conservative, gossipy place where the jobs don't pay very well. It wasn't the cozy community we'd all love to live in that you encounter in many books of this type -- I think most of us wouldn't want to live in Whitehorn, which I think was a weakness of the book. If I'm going to find the man of my dreams, I would also prefer that he had a better paying job than our deputy sheriff Sterling has -- nothing very romantic about scraping by!

The story begins with the discovery of an abandoned baby. These two wounded people fall for each other and before long, they're an item, then trouble intervenes -- a misunderstanding. Not an original plot, but a greater problem was the quality of the writing. Even more of a problem was the treatment of infertility and of the problems of people who have been traumatized sexually.

What I found unbelievable was the speed with which the inhibitions vanished, and suddenly they were having great sex -- as if traumatized women just need to meet the right men and then all their trauma will be as nothing.

Apparently the author has a following, but this book wouldn't lead me to seek out her books. On the other hand, there's a teaser at the end that does make me wonder what follows in this ongoing story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Serious and Sensual, May 30, 2009

This review is from: Rogue Stallion (Montana Mavericks, Return to Big Sky Country, Book No.1) (Mass Market Paperback)
It's always great to have a book that includes a strong sexy leading man, coupled with a serious independent, yet sensual, woman. These ingredients can only be masterfully mixed by Diana Palmer in her way and in her style. The story of two survivors of life's hardest knocks is woven with scenes of sorrow, anger, sex, and determination. This story will keep you captivated.
