4.0 out of 5 stars Player Doesn't Work with Windows-XP
Just got the player. It looks like a great value for the money. However when I got home I was disappointed to discover that my new Windows-XP Pentium-4 machine was unable to talk to the player. Apparantly the USB driver did not recognize the device. I was forced to use my older computer running Windows-98.

5.0 out of 5 stars Who'd Have Guessed?!, June 26, 2002

Though this product appears to be made out of the cheapest plastic available - it will knock your socks off! It's definitely not what it looks like. Tiny, easy to put in your pocket, it comes w/64MB of MP3 stoarge (about 2 hours ) which is enough for any gym visit. Then it also offers a slot for inexpensive SMART MEDIA cards from 32-128 MB sizes. Software that it comes with is baby-simple and the sound - even with the rinky-dink earbuds is great. Offers just enough bells & whistles and you can't beat the price. USB cable & wrist strap come with player, CD software & manual. Upgrades for software to be WIN XP compliant are free at www.emiglobal.com. Buy one or more for everyone in your family! Classic Brand is the best kept secret around. Have 2 of their DVD/VCD/MP3 set-top players and they're great, too. Prices are astoundingly low. Enjoy!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great sound from a small package, June 10, 2002
This review is from: Classic MP3 Player (MP6400) (Electronics)
Setup was real easy. Stick in a battery, and then plug in the included USB cable. Let the computer recognize the new hardware, and grab the drivers from the included CD-Rom. Next run setup.exe from the CD-Rom, and install the MP3Manager application. First thing you do in the app is format the built-64Mb memory. You can also slot in a 128Mb SmartMedia card, for a total of 192Mb (3 hours). Copying files take a matter of minutes, and although the app doesn't have a drag-and-drop mechanism like Explorer, it's easy nonetheless. Sound quality is awesome. I would recommend buying a better pair of earphones. Has all the functions of a portable player - FF/rewind, next/prev track, volume, bass, treble, etc. Nice & compact - slightly bigger than a pager. Loses one star because the casing is that transparent plastic used on cheap pagers. PS - XP users need to download updated drivers from EMIGlobaldotcom.

Classic seems to have snatched defeat from the jaws of victory with their MP6400 MP3 Player. I was attracted to the product because of its small size, light weight, the use of economical 128M Removable Smart Media card, use of a single AA battery for power, and the attractive price.

Unfortunately, several design decisions, poor attention to detail, and very poor reliability and service make this product disappointing.

The unit does not connect to the widely used Microsoft Windows media player, it does not play WMA files, and it uses a proprietary format for the Smart Media card. The player requires the use of Classic's own MP3 management software. This software is very basic and unreliable. Others have reported the compatibility issues with windows XP. In addition, the software does not connect to the unit reliably. This often requires several attempts to connect the unit. A much more serious problem with the PC connection also exists. If I am not careful to turn off the unit, wait, then disconnect the USB cable, the entire memory of the device is wiped out. This happened several times while trying to download to it.

Finally, the plastic case is very inferior. It is difficult to open the battery compartment and the Smart Media compartment, The sliding locks are poorly made and ineffective, The display is poorly aligned in the case and there is no provision for a belt clip or wrist strap.

In July the unit stopped working entirely. We sent it back in early September, and it was returned on December 12. The unit has now spent much more time in repair than it has spent working. The new unit is supposed to be their new MP6410 model, however it still looks like the old model. Time will tell if the Model 6410 is the great product that the MP6400 could have been.

I'm very happy with my mp6400. For the price i really didn't expect the audio quality to be as good as it is. This thing really rocks! It had twice the size of flash memory than its name brand competitors that were comparable in price and up to 128mb can be added via smart media card. I liked the design and size, it fits well in my hand (i chucked the handstrap that came with it) and is small enough to fit discreetly in my pocket. The lay out is very intuitive and functional and i had an easy time figuring it out. I'm the type that doesn't enjoy reading manuals so i'm glad this unit is simple to use. The software that comes with it is also a no brainer to install and use to manage mp3 files. Everything worked well the first time i tried it. I'm using win 98 to run the software, for those using the xp platform there is an update that can be downloaded at their website. I'm not allowed to write the url in this review, but the company name is emiglobal NOT classic. You can probably figure out the rest of the address yourself.

The built in 64mb holds up to 10 to 15 songs, depending on the file size of your music. I'm a musician and i use the mp6400 primarily as a study tool for music i want to learn, ingrain and perform so the 64mb is plenty enough for me. I don't feel a real need to use it as a juke box type player with hours of songs on it right now, but it's nice to know the memory is expandable.

Well I see why this item has been taken off the shelf. I received this item as a Christmas gift just this past Christmas. I have tried to load the software onto my computer...what happens...it crashes my computer where i have to reformat the entire thing and start all over again. I went to there website where they have listed new updated software for it. The software that they claim to be updated does not even have all of the files..it was missing files last time I was there just about a week ago. Anyone else having problems ...

1.0 out of 5 stars sucks with windows xp, February 17, 2002

hey looked cool but this player is is not compatable with windows xp, great value but for everyone that just upgraded, or soon will upgrade to windows xp, you will want to smash the stupid thing against the wall. it is very frustrating and i keep banging my head against the computer screen. there are no drives to be found online and no help in the manual. it doesn't even say "not compatable with windows xp" on the box. what a mistake this product is, i just wasted two hours of my life trying to get it to work, don't buy it!

i am one that has never had an Mp3 player besides this one but I new that this player was giving me a good preformance. It sounded like an home stereo. Not only was the sound great but it was easily handeled and it also dosn't take an rocket science to figure out how to work it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Love it and its easy, September 24, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Classic MP3 Player (MP6400) (Electronics)
I loved this unit, its light weight and easy to use (the lock feature is handy when in your pocket).

Other people have given the work around for XP, i would return XP before this player anyway.

The main reason i am reviewing this product is to let folks know that if you have Nero and their MP3 Pro plug-in you can compress your files way down. The first set (not re-compressed) i got 18 songs. I compressed those with mp3pro (80kbit,44100hz stereo) and added 10 more for 28 total. Then i made a play-list in mp3pro (64kbit,44100hz stereo) and im at about 30 tunes with some space left. Not loosing any quality that i can notice.

Bottom line is I've read really bad reviews on some of the high end units and this one is good for the price. As all us electronic buffs know the price on this technology will come way in the near future.

99.00 is lot to spend on a unit that will be 20.00 in a year, but not as bad as spending 299.00 an one that will be 49.99
