Country meets north east England folk, January 10, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Stamping Ground (Audio CD)
A long time coming this solo from Rod Clements; I think its well worth the wait. This guy has been hiding his light under a bushel for years as a founder member of top notch folk rockers Lindisfarne. There are nods to his band on Stamping Ground but for the main, Rod strikes out his own way with some tasty and very taut songs about his roots in north east England and interests there and elsewhere, love, life, death, the whole damn thing, many co-written with Nigel Stonier (another name to watch), and backed by an assembly of great musicians including Thea Gilmore (another name to watch out for - check out The Lipstick Conspiracies album). Bluesy, rocking, folkie - that's Stamping Ground, an album about a man reflecting on where he's from and where he's going. When you are a man of this age, with a story to tell, that makes for some potent listening.
