The shore-front Lighthouse Caf at Hermosa Beach was the hub of the L.A. Jazz scene throughout the '50s. From 1949 until 1961, this Californian beach front niterie may have hosted everyone from Miles to the MJQ, Lee Morgan to Cannonball Adderley, The Jazz Messengers to The Jazz Crusaders but it is for its resident (Light) House Band that this venue is fondly remembered. Mainly comprised of former Stan Kenton soloists, The Lighthouse All-Stars boasted such stars as Shorty Rogers, Maynard Ferguson, Shelly Manne, Jimmy Giuffre, Bud Shank, Bob Cooper, Frank Rosolino, Conte Candoli and many more. . On this Giant Steps release, it's Stan Getz plus Teddy Charles (vibraphone) who are in the spotlight. In doing so, it recaptures some of the magic that was unique to those nightly sessions at The Lighthouse back in the day. Giant Steps.
