Stan Getz, Bossas and Ballads: The Lost Sessions

Verve Records announces a major find, a previously unreleased session of vintage work by Stan Getz, one of the giants of jazz history. Bossas and Ballads: The Lost Sessions was recorded in March, 1989, and produced by Getz's close friend Herb Alpert. Backing the celebrated saxophonist is his longtime partner, pianist Kenny ... Editorial Reviews

The first collection of Stan's earliest recordings for Norman Granz, this set presents stellar performances that haven't been available in almost 60 years (two-thirds of these have never been on CD). These 1952-55 recordings capture a young jazz cat on the rise, joined by Bob Brookmeyer and Max Roach among others on the 10" LPs Stan Getz Plays, The Artistry of Stan Getz , his three Interpretations LPs plus singles and bonuses from those sessions (including unissued alternate takes). Soak up "The Sound" as you hear Stella by Starlight; Body and Soul; Erudition; Pot Luck; Minor Blues; Crazy Rhythm; Willow Weep for Me; I'll Remember April; Flamingo; Spring Is Here; Rustic Hop; Time on My Hands; Nobody Else but Me , and 32 more!

5.0 out of 5 stars PERFECT LOGIC! March 1, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Stan Getz fans have been waiting a long time for Verve to reissue the Interpretations albums with Bob Brookmeyer and here they are handsomely packaged with the Stan Getz Plays date featuring Jimmy Raney. Chorus after chorus melding into a complete story on every track. I call it perfect logic. This kind of musical thinking seems to be missing from todays crop of players. No small feat I'm sure. I love every note...and you will too! Just a note concerning the production of this set. The CD's fit rather tightly in heavy sleeves with no paper protection. Enough use and "scuffing" of the play side is apt to happen. Also on disc three track nine, "Flamingo" is taken from "Stan Getz At The Shrine" rather than the intended studio take from "The Cool Sounds". Also on disc three, track six "We'll Be Together Again" is simply a fade out of the master take. The way I hear it Verve couldn't locate the EP copy. That being the case I see no need for track six at all. Regardless of my nit picking it's a great set and well worth the wait.

4.0 out of 5 stars dance of the experts October 31, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Stan Getz was just a spectacular tenor sax man! After all of his contemporaries are gone, Getz music stands above them all certainly in terms of listen-ability. Yes there were others who were more original, more daring, but none more consistently listenable than Stan "The Sound".

Getz and Brookmeyer play and dance around one another in arabesques of sound, Bopping and weaving, Much is wonderful to hear, all is greatly listenable. For a decade after Getz death, more unreleased recording were discovered, but this river has pretty much stopped.

Getz, like Miles Davis, was a great talent scout, finding the best new talent in the business to back him up (and often paying them next to nothing for their efforts, but that's another story). Producer Norm Granz was constantly pairing him up with other musicians, looking for the ideal partners. Some of these worked well and some didn't. Getz hated Chet Baker, who he was often paired with (for what it's worth.) Getz was, apparently, despite his wonderful sound, hard to get along with. And drugs didn't help.

One partner Getz held in high esteem (and liked) was valve trombonist Bob Brookmeyer. They were of a like mind about Cool Jazz and bepop. Getz told a jazz magazine in the fifties that "Brookmeyer was in his quintet". Brookmeyer heard about this and was infuriated. Getz quickly backpedaled and said he "wished Brookmeyer was in his band" and this calmed Brookmeyer down. Getz treated Brookmeyer as an equal, not a backup player and he did this with few if any others. Getz went so far as to use a special metal mouthpiece when playing with Brookmeyer so their tones would better match!

Some of this set has been readily available for decades, some hard to find and some not available since its' creation.
