5.0 out of 5 stars Stan "The Man" Lee - 'Nuf Said!!!!, May 4, 2003

Stan "The Man" Lee was the mastermind behind some of the greatest comic book heroes of all time, and a pioneer in comic book story telling. The legacy that Mr. Lee has created at Marvel Comics has withstood the test of time. Without a doubt, his creative genius was the foremost inspiration behind the popularity and growth of the entire industry. I've always been a huge fan of Marvel Comics and I can say it was a real treat to watch this interview of Mr. Lee, whom I admire and have so much respect for. He has brought me untold hours of entertainment throughout my life, creating the foundation of my love for comic books. Thank you Stan Lee. The DVD also has some special features, including a bonus interview with Mr. Lee's wife and a narrated poem written by him. Both of these alone are worth the price of the DVD.

4.0 out of 5 stars like a 20/20 for Stan "the Man", June 3, 2002
Marvel fans have been waiting for something like this. Stan Lee, in a sit-down interview, 20/20-style, telling about his life, his love and his work. And instead of Barbara Walters, we get the much-more-worthy Kevin Smith shooting the questions.
Stan is very candid and honest and really draws the viewer in with his histories, insight and commentaries. Smith asks the questions that fans want answers to, and plenty that most of us wouldn't have thought to ask, including the issues of co-creatorship, genesis of ideas and generalities about the beginnings of Marvel.

Stan Lee is as interesting a personality as anyone could ask for - he is proud of his body of work and views it very earnestly and in context.

The DVD has plenty of extras, most of which are pretty short and sweet. The interview with Joan Lee (Stan's wife) is AWESOME and gives a great perspective on him as a person, and Stan's poem recital is excellent.

A great DVD for comic fans that want to learn about a legend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ultimate Fanboy DVD!! A must have!!, May 17, 2002
By
This DVD has two of my favorite people in comics, Kevin Smith and Stan "The Man" Lee. Stan Lee and Marvel comics are the fondest memories that I have as a child, and the reason that I still read comics 30 yrs later. Kevin Smith has done what every "FanBoy" would love to do. This DVD has information that is legend, and also info that I had never heard before. When Stan is telling the stories about marvel comics in the 50's and 60's you feel like you are really there. Kevin has the same look on his face that I would have if I could interview Stan... utter admiration and amazement!!! If you love comics as I do, GET THIS DVD!!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Man Behind the Mythology, May 20, 2002
This is a truly interesting DVD in that it features Stan "The Man" Lee, creator (or co-creator) of Spider-man, The Incredible Hulk, the Fantastic Four, and virtually all of the early concepts that formed the pantheon of Marvel Comics characters. On this disc Stan is interviewed about the inspirations for these legendary characters by none other than film-maker Kevin Smith, who you may recall gave Stan a cameo in his movie Mallrats. While I have read a lot of the information presented here in various other places, there's something that's just plain cool about hearing the stories from the man himself.
There isn't a whole lot on this disc as far as extras go, but it does have an interview with Stan's wife, some vintage home movie footage, and a few other items of interest. But the feature presentation is really well done and worth having.

Fans expecting a hardcore documentary will not get it here, but they will get a nice sit down interview with Stan Lee.

No great insights abound here, mainly because Stan is a charming guy - and he isn't about to dish the real goods on the industry. He remains the peerless diplomat. What you get is Stan the Man in conversation, but not Stan the self-introspective creator.

This complements Stan's book biography well - which provides slightly more detail about Stan's life. I didn't learn that much about Stan and his work here, but it's fine to watch nonetheless.

Stan Lee, the Father of Marvel Comics. Kevin Smith, the off beat filmmaker who gave us Jay and Silent Bob. If you've seen Smith's films, you know that he and Stan aren't strangers. Listen with interest as Kevin and Stan discuss the origins of Spider-Man, the Hulk, the X-Men, Daredevil, and the others. Watch rare film of Stan and his family. Listen to Stan read his poem, "God Woke", and explore the fascinating world of comics with their most reknowned founder.

5.0 out of 5 stars Insight and Entertainment, May 26, 2002
This review is from: Stan Lee's Mutants Monsters & Marvels (DVD)
I've been reading superhero comics since I was nine years old, and Spider-Man was my first. Having a chance to see Kevin Smith -- whom I currently regard as one of the most talented writers on the planet -- sit down and discuss the creation of the webslinger with one of his "fathers" was absolutely wonderful.

I've heard a lot of Stan's stories before -- in books, in interviews, at comic conventions -- but they never get old. The energy and enthusiasm this man has for his creations, even at an old age, is really remarkable.

The DVD is divided up into two shorter films -- "Creating Spider-Man" (obviously about Spider-Man himself but also with tidbits about the new movie) and "Here Come the Heroes" (in which Stan gives the rest of the Marvel Universe its due). Stan speaks with such respect for the artists he's worked with, the other writers, his Distinguished Competition and even his interviewer that it's impossible not to get pulled right in.

There aren't many extras on this disc and one has to wonder why some (such as the 90-second or so clip discussing the ill-fated "Fantastic Four" movie) weren't simply cut into the documentary itself, but the 7-minute interview with Stan's wife is worth it.

Anyone who's ever loved a Marvel comic should check this DVD out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply great..., May 18, 2002

Let it be known that this DVD is NOT just for comic book fans. Stan Lee is an amazing man with a gift for storytelling. As a writer I found this DVD quite unbelievable - the evolution of characters, the use of continuing stories, giving the audience characters they can relate/identify with. And, I never knew that Stan Lee was 40 years old(!) when he created Spiderman.
This is a very special and unique DVD. I highly recommend it.
