These Golden Boys Were Fighting Acquaintances ?,
By Original Mixed Up-Kid "jg" (New York United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Stan Meets Chet (Audio CD)
This session was recorded in 1958 in Chicago and features Getz, the saxophonist highly influenced by Lester Young and Chet Baker, the trumpet player considered a Miles Davis devotee...both are quality known men and rumour has it they have been at odds with one another so perhaps what comes as a surprise is their pairing on this CD (only on 1/2 of the cuts). The music is also found on a USA release so don't buy this pricey import...The USA Verve release has great sound and the tracks are standard fare..I'll Remember April,Autumn In New York/Embraceable You/What's New(medley),Jordu and Cherokee(Half Breed Apache)...you won't be disappointed and it has it's fine moments with Getz's longer notes and Baker's sparser delivery...It runs over 50 minutes and is a worthy collection fusing West and East in Chicago minus the Blues but nonetheless nice music and a worthy CD to have. If the tracks were played more together with 2 men it would have been a sure 5 star..they are accompanied by piano, drums and bass...

Successful Meeting,
By Michael B. Richman (Portland, Maine USA) - See all my reviews (TOP 500 REVIEWER) (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER) (VINE VOICE) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Stan Meets Chet (Audio CD)
For those who think Stan Getz is only synonymous with the Bossa Nova craze of the early 60s, "Stan Meets Chet" is excellent look at this great jazz player prior to the success of "Jazz Samba" and "Getz & Gilberto." On this album, the tenor saxophonist is paired with jazz romeo trumpeter, and sometimes crooner (though not on this date), Chet Baker and the result is a solid, relaxed set. They are joined on this February 19, 1958 session by the all-Chicago rhythm section of Jodie Christian on piano, Victor Sproles on bass and Marshall Thompson on drums. The band's repertoire covers several standards including a terrific reading of "I'll Remember April," a ballad medley of "Autumn in New York" (with only Baker soloing), "Embraceable You" (featuring only the rhythm trio) and "What's New?" (a classic Getz performance), the Duke Jordan penned "Jordu" (omitting Baker), and the Getz original "Half-Breed Apache." My reason for only giving this disc four stars is that the laidback feel that makes this title so enjoyable also leads to its demise. Chet Baker repeatedly hits bad notes during the opening bars of most songs, most notably on "Autumn" and "Half-Breed," and the piano consistently sounds poor and almost out of tune, though Christian's playing itself is competent. In all, "Stan Meets Chet" is a welcome addition to my Getz collection, but I'll still be taking "Getz & Gilberto" to the desert island.

Disappointing Results of Star Combination,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Stan Meets Chet (Audio CD)
I thought I would really enjoy the fruits of a collaboration of two of my favorite jazz artists. But the music turns out to be so frenetic and fast that it is bothersome. This might be the ticket for jazz fans that like that style, and surely with these two artists the horn work is superbly done so could be appreciated by discerning jazz aficionados. I like the more deliberate and carefully worked pieces, of which there are many, of these two jazz greats but this CD does not go in the right direction for me.
