More About the Author

Douglas Bond, author of more than a dozen books, lives with his wife and six children in Washington State. He is a ruling elder in the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA), has a master's degree from Saint Martin's University, teaches English and history at Covenant High School, and was awarded the regional Teacher Award for teaching young people how to write. He lectures on literature and Church history and leads study tours in Europe.

Bond first started writing books when his own children begged him not to read to them but to tell them original stories. He haltingly launched in. They wanted more. Some of those original stories came in installments and lasted for weeks. Then one night in 1999 he couldn't sleep. Ideas began pouring in for the Mr. Pipes books on hymnody. He sat up in the dark, so not to disturb his intensely patient wife, and scribbled out the opening episodes, mapping out the first book before morning. And then he began writing furiously.

And continues to do so. His fourteenth book, Guns of Providence will release in June, 2010, with more on the way. His best-selling book, The Betrayal, has been published by Den Hertog in Dutch. P&R Publishing and now Reformation Trust (Ligonier Ministries), are his primary publishers, with forthcoming books on John Knox and the Scottish Reformation, a childrens picture book in verse on the book of Job, an Anglo-Saxon historical fiction novel, and another volume to the Fathers & Sons series, likely to be entitled, HELD FAST By Christ Alone. And other ideas.

He also has written articles for MODERN REFORMATION magazine and other publications. If you'd like to follow his web site and blog go to bondbooks.net and douglasbondbooks.blogspot.com.

One critic has written that "Douglas Bond is a rising star in the historical fiction genre for older and younger readers." Christian Book Previews

5.0 out of 5 stars Great conversation starter, February 27, 2009

I heartily agree with the first reviewer. It's a great starting point for conversations. My youngest son and I are both pretty quiet, this book really helps open dialogue. I found that it took some time getting used to the author's style during the first few chapters, but then as the chapters go on, maybe I just relaxed/adjusted, it became easier to discuss what we agreed with, and what we thought would be better said in a different way. Nevertheless, this is a great book; I haven't seen anything better.

I'm the father of four homeschooled children, two of whom are now in college. I'm reading this book with my third son, who is 17. If you love Jesus, I know you want to pass that passion on to your son. This book will help you share your values, something I'm sure you do anyway, but this'll give you a systematic outline and a conversation starter. I'm looking forward to volume 2.

5.0 out of 5 stars Go For The Family, March 25, 2008

Great book for fathers and sons to go through together. I find this book helps stimulate conversation and does not encourage a "lecture" from father's, but actually encourages dialogue. A great book! A great tool to help lines of communication to stay open between fathers and sons.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book, unfortunate ending, August 2, 2011

This review is from: Stand Fast in the Way of Truth: Fathers and Sons Volume 1 (Paperback)
This book was a tremendous blessing to my son and me. We read it together over summer vacation. It sparked some healthy conversations that would not have have happened otherwise. The book is well-written, engaging, and yet meaty. Key issues that young men face (and father's need to discuss with them) are dealt with in each chapter...except for the very end. The reason I can't give it five stars is that the author airs his pet interpretation issue (which is not on topic) under the offensively presumptive title "How to Understand the Bible" in the last chapter. There are some non-fundamental, difficult things to understand in the Bible, areas where good men can disagree. It would have been similarly inappropriate for a Baptist to end such a book riding the issue of immersion through the last chapter and stating that "real men" don't shy away from getting dunked. But overall the book is quite effective, especially for the young teen son and dad to read together.
