I heartily agree with the first reviewer. It's a great starting point for conversations. My youngest son and I are both pretty quiet, this book really helps open dialogue. I found that it took some time getting used to the author's style during the first few chapters, but then as the chapters go on, maybe I just relaxed/adjusted, it became easier to discuss what we agreed with, and what we thought would be better said in a different way. Nevertheless, this is a great book; I haven't seen anything better.I'm the father of four homeschooled children, two of whom are now in college. I'm reading this book with my third son, who is 17. If you love Jesus, I know you want to pass that passion on to your son. This book will help you share your values, something I'm sure you do anyway, but this'll give you a systematic outline and a conversation starter. I'm looking forward to volume 2.

Great book for fathers and sons to go through together. I find this book helps stimulate conversation and does not encourage a "lecture" from father's, but actually encourages dialogue. A great book! A great tool to help lines of communication to stay open between fathers and sons.

Great book, unfortunate ending,

This book was a tremendous blessing to my son and me. We read it together over summer vacation. It sparked some healthy conversations that would not have have happened otherwise. The book is well-written, engaging, and yet meaty. Key issues that young men face (and father's need to discuss with them) are dealt with in each chapter...except for the very end. The reason I can't give it five stars is that the author airs his pet interpretation issue (which is not on topic) under the offensively presumptive title "How to Understand the Bible" in the last chapter. There are some non-fundamental, difficult things to understand in the Bible, areas where good men can disagree. It would have been similarly inappropriate for a Baptist to end such a book riding the issue of immersion through the last chapter and stating that "real men" don't shy away from getting dunked. But overall the book is quite effective, especially for the young teen son and dad to read together.
