a great story for the man who has a driving desire to drive,
By A Customer
This review is from: Stand on It: A Novel by Stroker Ace (Hardcover)
fast and hard and live life on the edge. also may enlighten some wives of those men who stare at the tv all day sunday. we like stock car racing because it's a reckless, death defying, push it to the limit sport. deep down, most men secretly wish they could be Stroker Ace. free of all obligations except winning the race. In the end, Stroker Ace wish's he was just like us. hmm.. guess the grass is always greener in the infield. the moral of the book is this: "if you're ever gonna stand on it at all, stand on it now. the longer you wait, the slower you get".

Just how good IS it?,
By A Customer
This review is from: Stand on It (Paperback)
STAND ON IT is to auto racing, as Spinal Tap is to rock & roll. These are nearly true happenings, based loosely on the life of the late Curtis Turner, a 50's & 60's NASCAR legend. The driving techniques are so vivid that it feels as if you're riding along. But let's not forget the women, and the alcohol, and the absolute insanity. The best semi-documentary on auto racing you'll ever read.

Must read for older racing fans,
By A Customer
This review is from: Stand on It (Paperback)
This book is dated now, but it is a great read for folks who were fans of the sport in the 60's and 70's. There were lots of stories from that period that took place on and off the track that are recounted in the book.It makes me laugh out loud every time I read it!

A man among Kings,
This review is from: Stand on It: A Novel by Stroker Ace (Hardcover)
Slow melting ice is just a long winded tale.Slow melting ice is or will be an expression used when a book review/conversation makes no sense or rambles on with or without direction...I am disturbed by my current publisher who uses its power to encourage everyone within its grip to scan items at a mom and pop store and then order it via the once questionable never made a profit company that Stroker Ace would loath. This is not a company, it is not a land for you and me...This is just a short period of history when snake oil can be sold to the mass's via the web...The company I speak of keeps its finger on your pulse, it knows what kind of medication you are on or should be on, this company lacks soul.Sisters and brothers these are the facts, the soul is very important, the soul is disappearing and disappearing fast in plain sight.
Fact is Stroker Ace was not written by a sycophant, the book was written by a human with opinions and a wee bit of history. Good stuff keep your eye out for a copy but for the rest of the story,do not trust the machine driving this current trend. In the end we all are all just hoping to be part of a family, this publisher is not about this, so reader beware.

If you love NASCAR before the corporate world took over...,

This review is from: Stand On It (Hardcover)
Welcome to the way NASCAR was when men were men, the cars were men and the women were, well...women. The all-time funniest expose' on NASCAR ever, bar none. This is back before the Politically Correct corporate culture that has taken over NASCAR existed. If you know a little NASCAR history, you'll identify the people (the names were changed to protect the guilty) and howl with laughter. Will someone Pulleezze make a movie that is really based on this book, not the Hal Needham peice of junk that waw released to theaters. Enjoy.

Way,way,way under-rated!,

This is the best, funniest book on racing ever. I can't believe it hasn't been memorialized. I hope Neely was paid well for the Hollywood trash-it should have been done by Newman... in the spirit of "Slap Shot".

The REAL story about auto racing,
By A Customer
This review is from: Stand on It (Paperback)
This book is an absolute MUST READ for anyone who ever wondered how to park their car in a swimming pool. Find out what racers really think just before they smack a wall at 200 mph. Learn how to start racing in a Birdcage and wind up in the big league of NASCAR. Learn out to turn a visit to the infield hospital into a long term relationship. Also, the finer points of racing in reverse gear at night. Seriously, this book is a riot! I read it orginally in the early 70's and have been searching for it ever since then. Not to be confused with the horrid movie starring Burt Reynolds.

More auto racing fun than you can imagine.,
By A Customer
This review is from: Stand On It (Hardcover)
The author is totally grounded in the auto racing world. Most of the tales of Stroker Ace and his friends actually happened sometime, somewhere to someone but heck, don't let the truth get in the way of a good story and this is definitely a good story. Stroke appeared in some short stories too in Playboy magazine along with Lugs his mechanic. If anybody knows the real name of the author (Dan Jenkins maybe?) reveal it.
